This is one of the best games that I enjoyed playing. Certainly deserves 5 stars. The concept of the game is simple choose an existing track and either race with the computer opponent or against clock. There are few cars and a jeep too if I remember correctly from which you can choose. When racing with the opponent, you can assign a car to them too. The games get fun when you and opponent have the same car. Each opponent has a brief description their weakness and strengths.

The graphics are good enough. So are the sound effects and music.

The game has a track editor which allows you to modify existing track or make your own track. You have loops, corkscrews, ramps, jumps, bridges, jumps, dividers, or tunnel etc. On the side of the track you can place trees, buildings, windmills, and tennis courts etc as sceneries. Between the jumps you can place the scenery objects.

Apart from the track editor, you can view reply of the race in different camera and camera angels. You can zoom in and zoom out and the best part is you can save it and view it any time.

The game play is very nice, easy controls, never gets boring to play. The opponents are OK.

All is all this is a great game.

I used to play this game at school, maybe 10 years ago, with some friends. We created new tracks daily for each other, just to see who got the best time. I even coded a (very basic) landscape editor back then, because the four(?) pre-defined landscapes were too boring after you've played hundreds of races on them

I think I still have the disks with the tracks somewhere. Need to find them *runs away, searching*

You're joking, right?

Stunts was released in 1990, some 10 years before the PS2 came out; it's hardly fair to compare games of such a different age... In 1990 racing game graphics didn't get much better than this + it was mostly the gameplay and the ability to build your own tracks that was important.

The whole - as you call it - "hype" is about the sheer enjoyability of gameplay.
Think about it - your "better" game for PS2 won't ever match the graphics on nextgen consoles like Xbox 360 or PS3. And yet, does that mean this game automatically sucks?
Of course not.
The same also applies to older games - there are people who like games with CGA graphics, text-based adventures/RPGs or games that use ASCII charset to represent the enviroment (like Rogue). Don't look down on us just because you cannot understand our tastes.

Brings back memories indeed! I recall a friend once played the game with a Lamborghini Diablo...so I was wondering if anyone would recall a cheat in the game, or if there was a way to import cars and not just tracks to it. I never figured it out.
Awesome add anyway, cheers Abandonia!

Ok, so how do I get past the security... nah, just kidding ;-)

I came across a whole load of old tracks and replays for this game on one of my archive CDs which brought back fond memories of it. I have uploaded them here for anyone who is interested:

http://rapidshare.com/files/31261458...plays.zip.html

Some of these were made by myself and friends, though I can no longer remember which ones. That's probably for the best, as some of the tracks are pretty awful to race on, but they do show off some of the crazy things you could do with this game!

That's what I loved about it. The game would have been a bit mundane if it wasn't for the track designer and replay features. The ability to share your own tracks and replays of your best times/most spectacular crashes with others made it great fun!

I love this game. I played it a lot on my 486. Excellent game! Excellent gameplay! I also use this game MID music as my cellphone ringtone!

Just one notice: This game has been released by Broderbund with name Stunts! and by Mindscape with name 4D Sports Driving. Each of these have versions 1.0 and 1.1. There are little differences among them, and one of the differences is the replay format. Broderbund replays are incompatible with Mindscape replays (and the other way around too).

Ah, didn't realise that. My version of the game on which those files were created is Mindscape 4D Sports Driving (version 1.1). I just tried the version of the game on this site (Broderbund Stunts! version 1.0) and tried a couple of the tracks and replays I uploaded. They do seem to work, so I guess the tracks are ok(?) but the replays actually play differently. There's one called "airborne", for instance, in which the car exits a tunnel from the ceiling and ends up shooting high into the air. The same replay on this site's version shows the car crashing inside the tunnel. On others the car stays on the track on one version and drives off the track completely on the other!

So, for the record, the files I uploaded are for 4D Sports Driving but may work (with inaccurate replays) in Stunts. Oh well, it was worth a try.
