Download the amiga music from one of the fanpages and play it with a .mod player in the background. That's what I do, much better atmosphere!

I loved U7, but THIS is the best game I have ever played, period. Civ, WC2, and SimCity are up there, but only U6 could transport you to another world, especially if you were playing for several hours w/o rest

Locaster, not to argue with you about this--but what was it that made you prefer U6 to U7? Or was it the shock at the time of its release on how much Garriott had revamped his formerly tile-based series, in all respects?

Actually, I also loved U6 more than U7. I dunno why exactly - the story was better in my opinion, and the graphics were just so cool for the time. Maybe 'cause I was younger?

I mean I used to play this game for hours and hours on end. No rest, no food, no water, nothing... U7 Didn't do that to me.

Funny though, I never finished it. I came real close, but never did.

U6 was the first game i saw on a PC and i was stunned. the time U7.1 came out i owned a PC on my own and played many games, but still i again was stunned by the incredibly great looking graphics. but on the long run i must admit that U6 had a greater effect on me and i think i might be because:

1. combat. in U7 it often happened that you hit C and suddenly all of your party members were running out of the screen and started fighting some evil enemies. you had almost no control over them and thus you were often running after them and hoping that they (or should a say spark) wont die until you arrived at the scene.

2. dungeons. in U6 you could crawl deeper and deeper in those huge dungeons. U7 was technically plain and all dungeons were inside the mountains. their complexity was pretty simple compared to U6

3. magic. although you had almost the same spells i rarely used any magic in U7. probably because of the hectic combat system.

It could have been first exposure to a title of its depth and graphics. Ultima 6 was very impressive, and few RPGs since then have treated serious themes, or offered puzzles as extensive. It's a shame the company backtracked so thoroughly with Ultima VIII and IX.

Yeah, I mean I loved U7 nearly as much, but I think I would have to agree with what the others are saying. For me, an 11 yr old at the time, I had never seen such an amazingly expansive game. Never before (and rarely since) had I felt literally transported into a game. So many things could be manipulated, there were so many characters, and when in a deep dungeon, you actually felt as though your party was alive. There was a real sense of relief felt when hobbling back to Britain after a long night of adventuring. I'll never forget the familar comfort in hearing the harpsichord playing "God Save the King" (I think that's what it is) upon entering Lord British's castle. That may sound funny, but all geekiness aside, this game was a dream for a boy so used to getting chastised by my friends for not owning an NES (my dad owned a videogame arcade so an NES was rather redundant.) U6 destroyed the notion that a console could compete with a PC. I mean Zelda was fun, but just look at the difference! As for U7, I would give it a 97/100 to U6's 99/100, so unless debating details with fellow U6ers like yourself I usually tell people I loved them both equally.

U7 was too buggy to enjoy at first, and although I've never said this before, the murder-mystery aspect and gore seemed sort of out-of-place. That said, in terms of hours spent I probably whittled away twice the hours playing U7 than U6. I mean, there were SO many hidden places and tricks in U7. In particular, I remember the joy in finding out that you could gain nearly infinite gold by simply making bets at Buccaneer's Den and then pulling your losing bets off before the race/spin was over. You know you've played a game too long when you can safely say you've "broke it" in every possible way.
In short, U6+U7= heaven on a PC
