Sorry for the duplicate, I just found out someone else posted the level1-trick already.

But maybe you didn't know that you can finish the game with negative time left:
If you enter the screen with Jaffar just wait left of the floor-trap and let the time expire. Jaffar obviously lacks the magic to stay there and wait for you to fight and kill the princess at the same time, and thus if you beat him after 60+ minutes the princess is still alive...

BTW, my best time is about 54 minutes left. No cheating, but a strange bug that teleported my right to the end of the final level after leaving level 1, haha!

I'd sure like to have a closer explanation of that!

Hmm, I only encountered that bug once and don't know if I can ever reproduce it, but as far as I remember I proceeded as follows:

Round1:
I started the game (downloaded here) in dosbox and played a new game (cheats disabled), saving at every possible save-position to be able to reload in case of unexpected disaster. I reunited with my shadow and crossed the invisible tiles. At the next screen with those falling tiles I saved the game and went to lunch, but obviously forgot to pause it.
When I came back after about 30 mins the intro/demo mode had been playing for quite some time. Thus I reloaded the game, finished it and then started all over.

Round2:
After finishing level1 (I think I had not taken the sword but outmaneuvered the guard) I was right back where I last saved the game and just had to run past that falling tiles, climb up to Jaffar and beat him. The hall of fame entry shows 56:22 remaining for this round...

I'm not sure about this, but I think I also had some problems with the copy-protection showing up despite of the crack during round1. This happens to me every now and then, I don't know what exactly triggers that. Maybe this hasn't even to do with the bug, maybe it was the lunch...

Anyway, I'd say that from a dramaturgical point of view one should delay Jaffars defeat to the last possible moment. For instance, the end of 'Goldfinger' would be much less funny if James Bond managed to turn off the nuclear device with 30 minutes remaining 'til total destruction instead of 7 seconds

Now that IS really funny ! However I wouldn't want to end the game without some real fighting!
I remember having finished the game with 19 minutes remaining, but 60 who can enjoy a game that way???

Allright. Well... I am mega stuck on level 8.

And no, it's not the blue guard. I don't understand why people
find this one hard, I just use down arrow to make-believe I
surrender than pick it up fast again. Very easy.

Here's what's hard.

Nope, it's not the 3 doors that you have to pass within
seconds. I managed to find a good rhythm for those, though
sometimes I'm tight as I hesitate running all the way through the
slicers like other players do.

What's hard is the door following that. I need to jump
over a cliff, but there is only 3 blocks distance, and the
left + up doesn't do anything. I just fall on the ground.
I try to do it as late as possible, because there is a
plate on the floor that closes the door behind me and I wonder
if that is the problem, but I've tried 100 times and can't
reach the other side. I know I will have to keep running
on the other side because of the loose plate but I can't get there.

I am running version 1.4 and am wondering is the problem
is with that version because no one anywhere seems to think
that the spot I'm mentioning is hard. There's something I don't
get. Do I have to jump from the tiny ledge above?

I looked at a video walkthrough and the guy just seemed to run and jump normally.

Thanks,

i am not sure what you are talking about...

However if you jump when you are running (just press the up key while you are running) you can jump much further. especially if you hold shift to hold on to the ledge later on.

If you are worried about door closing behind you than i think a mouse opens them later.

maybe you can make a screenshot of the section so we can solve your problem :-)

I'm talking about the 5th screen from the extreme right.

Let's recapitulate:

1st screen from extreme right: you have to jump to you death
and hold on to a tiny ledge, than clim 3 of those, than jump the other side to your death, and hold on the ledge to climb. Than you walk without making noise to not attract the attention of....

2nd screen from the extreme right: the orange guy, that is either awaiting (usually means instant death) or surprised depending your previous behaviour on the floor below. You need to kill him. If you're good, you can try make him fall on the plate button so that the following doors will remain open. Then you have to run + jump to get to that first door.

3rd screen from the extreme right: you're supposed to run fast through
2 slicers and the second door, especially because most of the time you don't have that much time before they close.

4th screen from right: run as fast as you can to catch the ledge
after a pit and get inside the final closing door (if the previous guard fell on the plate button maybe you aren't in such a hurry).

5th screen: here is where I have a problem. I try to run + jump but I always fall on the floor, as if there is not enough distance to run and jump. As if the "negative button plate" is causing an obstacle to my foots or something. I never could jump over the clift. Extremely hard. Is that a bug, or is it supposed to be hard, or is there a trick?? thanks

I found out more about that bug. Actually it is a teleport to any level-bug and I'm not sure if it is really a bug or a feature to resume a game you lost due to a lack of time. The "bug" can be provoked as follows:

-save the game at any level.
-restart the game (CTRL+R) and load the savegame (CTRL+L)
-restart again and play a new game
-complete level1

then you come out at the saved level with 60 minutes - time spent in level 1.
Seems to work every time, but in the end only produces ridiculous hiscores since you only get as far in the game as you've been before...

The Fall Guy, that was a clever suggestion, thanks.

I just finally finished the level before reading this.
It took me like 4 days.

I have no idea if I was lucky or just found the subtle
touch, but I did like you explain, went to the door and back.
Than run + jump, but by pressing the up just a fraction of second
after the Left. I think before I waited too long because I thought you
had to press Up AFTER you had run over that "negative button plate".
By pressing too soon I would also just jump in the void. I think you really have to press the Up at the right point, neither too soon nor too late.
So version 1.4 is definitely working, but I wonder if they made it harder.

The rest of the level was easy, though I really sweat when the guard was there and I was near the cutter. I knew about the mouse so much I had heard about it. Actually, before I even heard about it, just by looking
at the animation, I was thinking "huh? What the heck is she talking to a mouse for??". I had the impression that she was sending it for something.

Guess what. I'm not here to make a contest about being fast, just here to try to play this without cheat, but I started level 8 at 26 minutes left
and ended at....18 minutes left !!!! (yes, I had to redo the darn jump
3 times).

Are all the other levels as long as level 8? I'm starting to doubt
I will make it. Maybe cheat on the time if I must, or restart level
8 and try to do it without mistakes.

Cheers,

18 minutes could barely be enough if you save at the beginning of every level and reload once you found a fast way to the exit. I'd say the remaining levels aren't too difficult except for some jumps in level 12 (I fell to death at least 100 times on my 1st attempts there...).

If you run out of time try the teleport-bug I mentioned in the previous post. (hope they didn't remove it in V1.4)
