Does anybody else run into this problem where you try to open a report and the screen turns into scrambled black&white?

I played all the way up to mid-June, and it happened to me during the Nigerian embassy mission. I went back to my save point and tried every other possible action and always got the same problem when I opened the next day's report. So I restarted the game from January 1, and it happened again, this time in late Feb, on a different mission. Does this happen to anyone else?

thanks, andrew

Hi ppl,

been reading this thread, so some points:

1) Beating the subgenius mission (thoth).

This can actually be done without saving and restoring, and its much more satisfying IMO. Firstly, I ALWAYS put EVERYONE I can under surveleillance and tail them, unless I'm out of teams.

OK, so first of all, search the church leaders place (ransack). This should net you evidence (10K deposit), plus some a lead to two people - a donor and a receiver. Place them both under surveillance and tail, with the receiver of the cash being the most important. Also, ransack the receivers house - you should find a letter from the Don (saying to wipe out the donor), and a "workman contract" (this should be familiar looking to anyone who's played this game a bit before!). Anyway, just wipe out the "workman" and you've done it!

2) Rescuing the royal family member.

One of the three suspects is linked to the kidnapper. I can't remember exactly how to id them, but I think that by tailing/surveillance you can narrow it down (should be the one that visit King's Cross or some other suspicious place). This person should be abducted and tortured until they reveal the kidnapper. Then ransack the kidnappers place and you've done it.

If you want to be safe (and havn't drawn much attention to yourself), then just abduct all three suspects. As soon as they tell you their organisation, you can either interrogate them more or cross them off the list.

Also, I've found that in cases where there are time limits, it's often best to torture to level 2, then revert back to level 0 once they're "pale and drawn". Note that it's best to check the interrogation tab every day, as you don't want them to die beforehand! Note that sometimes they can still die before you get the info, or they may not give it up - I guess this makes sense, since sometimes you may not get someone to crack before the time-limit. You could always save/restore if you want to beat it (as the questions/answers from interrogation are random).

3) Beating the Thoth missions - the two bodysnatcher ones and the Illuminati (Art Exhibit guy).

This is actually not a hint, but a HELP ME!

No matter what I do, I can't beat these missions! I mean, I wipe out (assassinate, interrogate, or heavy assault) the correct targets, I search the right places (according to the walkthrough posted), yet no matter what I do, the thoth guy doesn't say I completed it! After a while, the missions just go away (I get the "to the shredder" message for them).

Is there any particular order for these? I've tried them in many different ways, and I can NEVER beat them. I know people here have done it - was there a certain order? I've beaten this game to get the PM (albeit cheating a little bit) - but have never beaten all Thoth missions because of this! I'm going nuts!

Thanks,

BrutalSquid

Cool game. But its boring because every case has to be solved in particular way.

I have played F13 a few times, some with more success than others. And I think I could offer some suggestions:
Read the DG's manual with an eye towards reality.
Anticipate whenever possible the potential political damage of each person brought to your attention.
Remember how long it takes for your operatives to complete their tasks.
Save before giving any potentially drastic orders.
For those who don't recall: R-Restore game/S-Save/Esc (X?)-Exit
I have the original floppies and the original DG's Manual. Since Virgin Games no longer even acknowledges its existence does that make it public domain software?

Another question: Does anyone know how to get Windows XP to support legacy software such as Floor 13? The Adlib drivers are not supported in XP so the sound doesn't play at all.

To those getting the "A:INSTALL" thing when trying to play the game. Unzip it to "C:\Floor 13", that should sort it.

My contribution. I found a txt based version of the Floor 13 manual. Enjoy!
http://floor13.altervista.org/manual.txt

update: I've just read it, and I can see why the game was later sold without it. Simply playing the game tells you all you need to know about it, for the most part.

Concerning the person who asked about raising the intensity of the interogations: From the DG's "door" screen you click for "go to departments". Then click on "Interogations" Then "captives". You will see buttions there for raising the intensity.
level 0 is minimal and is the starting level for all captives. Not exactly "the comfy pillows" or "the comfy chair", but the captive will not die so quickly.
level 1 is ordinary infliction of pain using commonly available items.
level 2 is "scientific" infliction of pain using specialized equipment.

Be aware of the reports of the captive's health as the days go by. If they are not that healthy to start with and you apply level 2 right away, they may die without telling you anything. Conversely, if they are very healthy to start with, it may take to long if you stay with level 0.

Gosh, this game is really really sick! I hope playing for too long doesn't permenantly twist my mind. (But then again, I've been playing Jagged Alliance 1 and 2 for too long). It's really sad how the war on terror has made relevant all the issues this old game raised when it first came out.

This is a pretty good game except for having to restart all over again whenever the popularity drops or Mr. Garcia comes calling. I've looked and I can't seem to find cheats or hex editor offsets that will let me get around either or both these limits. I don't find out that something was a mistake until its too late to save it. The "ctl-s on the chalk outline screen" bug works too slow for my patience.

In summary: can any of you post cheat codes or hex offsets for poll level and/or Mr. Garcia?
