installed dosbox followed everything up in that guide up to the point of changing the cycles and the autoexec line, after doing that it wont let me save the file (wtf?) - it says make sure i have the correct file and path name (which i do) ... help?
The file is set to read-only. Uninstall DOSBox and install it somewhere ELSE than the default Program Files directory (like C:\DOSBox).

rar sfx archive
It's a self-extracting RAR archive. Use WinRar to open it and extract its contents.

i dont understand this part, can you go through the steps of what you mean?

this is what i did so far -

download the crusader 2 - no regret rar file.
extracted files to c:\crusader - now in there are 6 csnrgrt applications - 1 is csnrgrt.exe and the other 5 are rar files - which i why i dont get what u mean.

i tried extracting one of the rar files and winrar gave me a message about invalid/corrupt information when it was extracting, and same if i tried to extract the .exe file.

:wondering:

Simply double click on the exe file, this will decompress the archive.

Hmmmm, see, sorry for that. Vista and dos applic ......

That's what you can do:
open dosboxconf again and look for:
Code:
[dosbox]
# language -- Select another language file.
# memsize -- Amount of memory DOSBox has in megabytes.
# machine -- The type of machine tries to emulate:hercules,cga,tandy,pcjr,vga.
# captures -- Directory where things like wave,midi,screenshot get captured.

language=
machine=vga
captures=capture
memsize=16
change memsize to 64 as this:
Code:
[dosbox]
# language -- Select another language file.
# memsize -- Amount of memory DOSBox has in megabytes.
# machine -- The type of machine tries to emulate:hercules,cga,tandy,pcjr,vga.
# captures -- Directory where things like wave,midi,screenshot get captured.

language=
machine=vga
captures=capture
memsize=64
Now be sure that those 6 files (5xCSNRGRT.r0x+ 1xCSNRGRT.EXE) are in the same folder that you mount as C in dosbox.
Input CSNRGRT , this will start the SFX' selfextracting archive' and will have enough memory in dosbox to run.

Have tested it and it works.

[EDIT]
As you said c:\crusader your lines will be
mount c c:\crusader
c:
csnrgrt

*Don't add those bold lines in dosboxconf, those are only needed once to decompress the archive.

Self-extracting archive is just like a RAR file, except it is combined with an executable code that allows the archive to be unpacked without need for a third-party program (that's why it's called self-extracting, duh)

Run WinRar first. Then from its manager window locate the executable file and try to open it. Don't be surprised, just see what will result.

Sounds like a multi-part archive (not uncommon, back in the days).
You might want to tell us the exact names of the files and the exact contents of the error message.

That's what I get when I try to use WinRar in Vista on the archive from AB:

I can see the files in the WinRar explorer, but can't uncompress them :/

But you can uncompress it in dosbox as I described, just set mem to 64.

[Edit]
And double clicking them in Vista ... now yeah, it's a dos sfx, says enough :/
[Edit²]
Maybe a reup in plain zip without those rar parts..... ?
[Edit³]
Now, Adamg gonna like this, tried it in 7Zip,-(was bored)- point it to that csnrgrt.exe, works. 7Zip that can handle those old RAR SFX flawless.

yay it worked - thanks a lot dosraider.

wow i cant believe it! i now have some few final queries

1. there is no music! if i remembered anything about this game - it was the music. i can hear sound when i use the install.exe to set up the game, but when i play it there is only sound effects and no music. help?

2. dosbox cant go full screen? :P

3. what settings should i use to make this game run at its best? the framerate is jittery every so often.

4. my final question - im seriously thinking of buying the full retail version game now because im feeling so nostalgic, but im just wondering will the game work on vista? would i have to use dosbox to run it again (no full screen etc)?

im asking this because i had this game before on CD but i was running it on windows ME or early xp or something and it didnt work then, so...

thanks again

Congrats. Enjoy it.

1: it's a rip, if you want music you need the full ISO or will have to buy the game. Even if you have the CD , it will run better with a mounted ISO (CD access, spin up/down times on modern systems ...)
2: ALT+ENTER
3:Edit dosboxconf again and check:
under header [SDL]
priority=highest,highest

under header [CPU]
core=dynamic
cycles=max

Eventually ingame hit CTRL+F12 to increase the CPU cycles (don't overdo it, set them too high and your game will become more jerky)
Close all that's running on the background and isn't needed. Dosbox needs plenty free CPU power. And Vista, now yeah, does a lot on the background.
How good the game will run depends of your hardware, crappy PC (RAM!)=crappy gameplay, but it should run better fullscreen.
4:Vista= dosbox.
