Question

Hi, all. I'm having trouble getting x-com to work. I downloaded X-Com from Abandonia (the dosbox link at the bottom - not the collector's edition at the top).

I have a Mac, and am running OS X 10.4. I have dosbox 0.72 (downloaded directly from the dosbox website).

I put the x-com files under Macinosh HD, in a file called dbgm. There is now a file there called xcom.

I opened dosbox, did mount c /dbgm

Then switched to c. Did cd xcom.

From here I have tried going straight to 'setup'. I have tried 'cdsetup'. I have tried 'install'.

I have tried mounting the folder as a cd. I've tried different sound settings and even no sound.

I have tried editing the ufocd.bat to take out sound, or take out %1ufoexe\black.

No luck: I'm getting only black screens, and or freezes.

I'd really like to play x-com again. I have a feeling I'm simply not doing certain things in the right order. I've gotten other games to work on dosbox when I had a windows PC, and right now on my Mac, I'm playing Master of Orion 2 from an old CD. So dosbox is working. However: x-com (sniff) is not.

Can anyone offer suggestions?
Much appreciated.
(note, I know there have been similar topics: however, the search feature here didn't return results, and a yahoo search didn't return exactly this situation, nor a guide to fix it).
Thanks a bunch to whomever can help me send my troops once more into battle.

you don't have to attach the document, just copy pate the text if it doesn't work. and, so, which one of the x-coms it was

Sorry, I have the first x-com: UFO defense, downloaded from Abandonia: the dos link at the bottom

I've been trying to paste the config file, and just for kicks the ufocd.bat here: but every time I click 'add reply' I get a white screen and it doesn't post.

There, it went through that time: just as background: my knowledge of Basic is rusty, but I've been using computers since 1983: my first computer was a Timex Sinclaire 1000!

In other words: I'm having a bit of trouble today, but it's not for lack of trying.

Yes, I checked. It's 0.72. Should I first run go.com and then ufocd.bat?

I tried both of them. Still only a black screen. Possibly there's some kind of incompatibility with my mac.

Anyway, thank you very much, sincerely, for taking the time to help me. Probably I'll content myself with other games for awhile, and now and then play around with the setting to see if I find a solution. If I ever find one, I'll post it here.

Thanks again so much for your help.

no probs, but one more idea, maybe if you tried different dosbox versions for mac then? you know if it differs in win versions, who knows=S

edit: yay
download this batch file i made, put it in to your xcom directory and try now
(then, of course, after mounting your drive run the above downloaded "GAME.BAT")
