Hello, I was looking through my old games and found Jetfighter 2. I tried playing it without Dosbox first (in Win Me), and after loading the flight mission screen it just quit and said "This program has performed an illegal operation and will not terminate." In DosBox, it just froze with a black screen at the same part, but with no quitting or error message. Is there any way to get this to work? Thanks.
I'm sure this game is freeware, and I have done a Google search and have seen many download sites (the game is also very small). You may want to download it- it's fun! I used to play it on the old Win 3.1.

I was appalled to learn at the time that no version of DOSBox supports this gem. If somebody manages to run this game please tell me how --trying VDMSound may cause fatal crashing.

If all fails, you can always buy a second-hand 486 machine and configure it for DOS gaming.

Unfortunatelly the seller --it's packaged along with 15 other DOS games-- only warns that it's a DOS game, so he appears to be saying that a DOS machine is necessary. It's a pity, the game is nearly as good as dead until a version of DOSBox supports it, if ever.

Second-hand 486's can be found at very convenient prices.

Indeed. But I was wondering, at the risk of straying way off topic, what would happen if a DOS partition was installed --or attempted to-- in a new computer? Where is the hardware border, and why does it exist? I had successfully installed a DOS 6.22 partition in my old Pentium III 450 MHz and every game worked fine, without running too fast or anything.

for dos there is no hardware border.
but ems memory proves difficult with modern motherboards
and speed issues will arise.

VGA and SVGA compatility with current videocards is diffult as well
soundcards with dos drivers are getting rare as well.
Btw It seems somebody at the DOSBox forum found the problem with this game and submitted a patch to fix it.

Ah yes, I knew about the sound --not about the rest. My old P3 had a SBPCI128 which included SB16 emulation drivers, but I did hear that more recent cards did not include nor support them. And playing without sound sucks most times.

I got the patch, some .DIFF file, but I'm clueless as to how to compile it in or whatever is necessary. Ah well, anyway my joystick can't be plugged into my new USB-only computer any longer.
