OK so here's the deal - I'm getting Xbox live soon, and also I want to move this PC into my room, and thus I need my room to be broadband-tastic. The thing is, the broadband jack is downstairs, and my room is, like a lot of bedrooms, upstairs. I've looked at wireless adapters, cable extensions, wireless modems, the lot, and now I'm just plain confused.

So the question is - what should I do? Bear in mind that a cable extension, although it's an option I'm definitely considering, would probably be a pain, because it's quite far between the jack downstairs and my room. How do wireless routers work? I thought it would be a transmitter and a receiver, but apparently it isn't, and I don't get it. If I got one, could I run it from the same source socket as my wired broadband connection?

Help me please.

Either you replace your wired device with a WLAN router or you simply connect an wireless accesspoint to your wired device.

Accesspoints are auite easy to handle since they just "spread" your connection from the router. Most of them can be configured to search for the correct settings themselves (dynamic IP).
Assuming your wired to wireless connection is built up, you need an wireless receiver for your PC. They come for several interfaces (USB, PCI, etc.).
You then can connect the PC with the WLAN.

I know this is very simplified but does it answer your question?
