Well, I have Win ME and HoMM works quite fine, has never frozen and features also sound....my version is not the Abandonia one, so I don't know wether they are different in some way.
I happen to be the only one to run this game finely without DosBox....maybe I'm blessed from heavens B)
I'll download the Abandonia version now, and eventually PM you in case I have some advice.
