Just get on any of the Quakenet servers, and once logged on, type "/join #abandonia"
Also, there are freeware alternatives to mIRC. One I would like recommend is
X-Chat 2.
In my opinion the warez problem isn't a real one. The channel can be moderated by Admin-appointed operators, and DCC exists even without an official channel, as people can agree to share their stuff over PM. Fserves and such like would of course be banned from the channel.
The advantages of an IRC channel are obvious:
- people get to know each other better.
- the discussion is instant, unlike on the slow-paced forum. Helps making decisions.
- the instant discussion makes it easier to give step-by-step instructions to those in need (technical help, for instance).
- the one-liner chats can be done on the channel instead of the forum.
- you don't always add everyone to your MSN list. On IRC the talk is public, and thus you get to converse with people you otherwise wouldn't.
- it is accessible to all platforms, and doesn't require registration.
That's just a few that popped into my mind.
