On my small (but not laptop) usb keyboard without numpad the shift button is
Shift! Adding maps in Training or Championship mode is still "ALT" but you must add at least two maps before pressing enter or it will return to title screen. Championship mode allows one to forfeit qualifying laps or races and skip to the next event by pressing ESC while pressing that in Training mode just abandons practice completely.
France or Portugal are recommended maps for training beginners other than the first stage (Brazil). Stay away from manual transmission and turbo mode until you have mastered cornering, braking and dealing with opponents (which appear in the side-view mirrors when over taking you). Turbo mode reaches higher speeds (and higher frame rates) and requires letting go of gas even on medium bends if you are maxed out in 6th gear. Have fun wearing out your tires so you can visit the pit stops.
If you are a fan..

It's not the terrible pc-speaker whine

you hear using modern hardware in dosbox.
And look up the predecessor "Vroom" released for the
Atari ST and
Amiga in 1991, as well as the non-DOS ports of "F1" or this game, the 1994/95 sequel known as "F1 Championship Edition".
