People always have things they like to stay hidden in the depths of the mind. Sculptures like this remind people of such (or similar) things, and since they are visible on exhibition, it's easy to throw dirt at them (and people of that times) to try to put our modern society into the more beneficial light. Better blame them than us, you know.
Not all people have the need to do that, though. But it still throws a bad light, on our modern society incidentally, since the first thing such sculptures remind us of, is something more gross than what they actually meant to be back then.
