You need right-buffed/powerful units, and it's... struggling, yes. But not deadly!
And if you still have problems with it then it's a clear sign that you still far from mastering this game. A lot of challenge will await you!

Wait, what version of game are you playing? V1.2 is considerably different from 1.1, and 1.3 is highly recommended to have good impressions on game, as it's introduce many needful elements.
Bad WinXP compatibility though.
