I'd love a real RPG version of Doom.
My favorite indie game of the past year:
World of Goo
This game has given me a real "old DOS game" vibe. It's like a dish which has so many other games mixed in: Lemmings, Worms, Incredible Machine, etc. It's unique yet it feels so ... retro. The perfectly made 2D just appeals to me so much.
I have to say, too many indie games make a crucial mistake: they lack the style of old DOS games. They mix modern and retro designs, they don't have decent music and fail to create a decent atmosphere. I mean, look at classics: their music is nearly always memorable. And even games like System Shock, whose music is horrible, have a great atmosphere to compensate.
I guess the problem with indie games, is that they're often one-man jobs or their music is made a friend who isn't really talented in writing their own.
It reminds me again, of that old id Software movie they filmed right before Doom's release - that guy who showed off his Commander Keen music showed that he was really passionate about his work. Guys like The Fat Man really did make a huge difference.
