I think because our "welcome" might turn out a little bit...hotter than a small campfire. If you saw any of the USA Vs. Aliens movies you would know how our general reaction to visitors would look like.

They are not particularly interested in us, but the problem is, if we don't get interested in them (including deeper exploration into space and scientifical pursuit for the reason being) then our civilization will come to an effective halt earlier or later. You see, there's always some goal in existence / life. And what is the goal in our current civilization? Faster computers? Getting international terrorists to shut up? And what then? Boredom. Stagnation. Scarce resources, dying out nature and irritation of human against other human, which is ultimately a world war.
There has to be a new direction in our civilization, and that soon, because our civilization has
already began to stagnate, the signs of which would be noticeable to anyone watching with attention.
