You don't have a sword yet, you'll get one soon enough though. When you have it you just have to stand a second when there's an enemy, and the prince will draw his sword automatically.
The game will likely run all right in Windows 9x. If it runs for you in later versions of Windows then go ahead but you won't get sound. The sound was 6 bits quality, so you won't be losing much. But you can use the DOSBox DOS emulator and it will play PoP just like the good old days.
