One of the most common questions ever asked on this forum. You were trying to run the DOS version of the game in Windows, which ended in the typically catastrophic manner.
What you should have done is run the game in
DosBox. If you have any problems with it, make sure to read the readme file - if that's not enough, there is always the
official FAQ and
Basic Setup and Installation guide.
