I went to see Merchant of Venice a couple of weeks back and it confirmed something for me. I HATE SHAKESPEARE!
I fell asleep for about an hour and when i woke found i was only half way through the play. Dont get me wrong, i understand the contribution he's had on English literature...just....he bores the nuts of me.

Anyway, nuff of my rant. Good luck!

Well, The Merchant of Venice is one of the worst Shakespeare plays ever. Right up there with Timon of Athens and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. There are some really good ones as well. One of my personal favourites is Titus Andronicus: it's bloody brilliant - and very bloody at that - it's got marvellous language, though, and some extremely strong visual effects. Works very nicely on the stage.
But quite a few of the plays only become really interesting when you've not just read the play itself but also read around it a bit, and if that isn't really your type of thing it'll just bore you to tears...
Then again, nobody's forcing you to do a degree in English Lit, so the number of Shakespeare plays you'll have to get through is quite limited, really. We're actually expected to have read every single play, plus quite a bit of criticism, so if you think about it that way, you're lucky.
