Some distributions are freeware like Debian, Gentoo, Slackware, Ubuntu etc.
The requirements are somewhat like Windows (ofter lower).

Of the above mentioned, Ubuntu is the easiest to get started with. You could also try Knoppix. Knoppix doesn't need to be installed you boot off the CD. That way you can try it out before installing and make up your own mind about it.
