Quiz players - your motivation for playing?
 

I realized today that I started playing the screenshot quiz on a daily basis almost 7 years ago. This week I managed to creep up 1 position on the leaderboards, but it took me almost a year to do this (I'm at #44 now, woohoo!). This made me wonder: who are my "opponents" :) ?

My main motivation for playing is a shot of much needed nostalgia everyday before I go to work. Sometimes screenshots bring back memories of happy times and sometimes this even makes me download and play a game in the evening. I even try out games I never played as a kid, because I like the artwork. Very motivational!

As I didn't play all the games on Abandonia when I was younger, I consider myself a mediocre quiz player: some weeks I only guess one screenshot (after 20 minutes of browsing through the database), some weeks I manage 5 out of 7.

So who are all you other players? How long have you been playing? Are the people with the higher rankings still playing actively? Would love to read your stories.

My rating (and most of top 10, as far as I know) is not from quiz but rather from other activities. I am playing it sometimes, when I am know or can guess the answer, but nothing serious. :)

I don't even think about it, I just play it. Habit, I guess. XD
Don't know all the answers and I never spent more than couple of minutes searching in case I'm not sure but I have a feeling that a similar game could lead me to the right answer. :)

Well, there are some reasons for this:

• Remembering old and dear games (aka Good Old Games) because of nostalgia :loveab:;

• Sense of Challenge :yahoo:;

• Rank new positions in Ranking of Piece of Eight :1stplace: :eeee:;

• Surpass my rivals! Bonk! :chair: Bonk! Bonk! :bleh3: :umm: :whistling: :sneakrete:

I think I play it mostly out of habit now, as I enjoy the quiz for many years now :smile2:. And also with a bit of ambition to get to higher ranks.
Many times, when I didn't know the answer right away, I spent good amounts of time searching through the archives to find the screenshot. Often starting with a game that looks like it could fit the genre and clicking through several levels of "If you like this game, you will also like..." until I find it. And in doing this I stumbled upon many interesting games I never heard of before, so it's always fun and a great bit of nostalgia.
Clearly I spent way too much of my time with this :smile2:

And congratulations to you, Mystvan, for surpassing me in rank yesterday :OK:. I know it took you a lot of patience, as you had to wait for the few days when I was not online and missed the quiz (damn real life interfering with the online fun) :smile2:

I am currently ranked 25 and climbing and I play the quiz daily. I am just obsessed with the quiz as you can see from my dozens of posts just in the quiz error topic alone. As I have written before, I wait impatiently every day for the next quiz to post in order to answer it and then start waiting again the 25 hours (a quirk on site has the screenshot quiz as being in world with a 25 hour day:max:) until the next quiz arrives. I feel very bad on days when there is an error in the quiz or the site is acting up so that I can not sign in in order to answer the quiz. Sometimes I feel like I am going through withdrawal when the there is a sign-in problem with Abandonia. I wish that it could be a twice or three times a day quiz in order to get my fix. You can see in these posts (here and here and here and here) as to how far my obsession has gone.

So you're saying you should start a quiz-player's anonymous?

You should start practicing (H)yoga regularly...

well, isn't that nice? We have exactly the same score now. Let's see, how long we keep it that way. How long until one of us slips? Or a bug takes some of our hard earned tokens away?
We can always swith place 8 and 9: whenever you log in before me on a new day, you will claim eighth place, but when I log in, I reclaim it. And for some reason, whenever our scores are tied, I get a rank in front of you, sorry :smile2:. I don't know why.

Now I've learned the lesson: You should never log in using more than one browser during the start of Daily Screenshot Quiz. I did not use the browsers simultaneously, but nonetheless, it took me 5 PoE twice. :headslap:

With regard to ranking order in the list, it should consider the list in alphabetical order in the case of tie, I suppose. :dunno:

I'm not so sure that the problem is the different browsers. Because the same just happened to me, using my normal browswer only, not doing anything differently than other times, and it stole my PoE anyway.
I answered correctly, even got the message "Your answer was correct and you earned 5 pieces of eight!" but didn't get the 5 PoE.
I think abandonia just fucks up from time to time without any obvious reason. Dang.

Hm, new bugs every day. :oh:

After I logged out of abandonia, I'm not able to log back in again. I can log in on the Forums, but not on the main page. It's not a problem with the password, I tried to reset it, but it won't even let me do that, I get the message "Sorry. The username Bonk is not recognized.", although my profile is obviously still there, I can access it from the members page.
To make things worse: before I logged out I correctly answered the screeenshot quiz, got the "answered correctly" message, and even received my 5 PoE (see screenshot) - at least for a short time, then it took them away again, when I look at my profile now, I'm down to 18567 PoE again.

Mysterious, strange and frustrating :(

I am really sorry, friend Bonk, but you will be very disappointed with my response. :(

I tried to contact the Abandonian Admins, but they said that since the site has much more serious and important bugs, they will not be able to restore the lost PoE due to less important and / or serious bugs.

So it turns out that I lost my 10 PoE forever. :hairpull:

That is why I try to log in to two or more browsers, Bonk. :sick:

It may sound silly and weird, but “it is better to be safe than sorry”.

What I am going to say will seem obvious to many Abandonian non-Quiz Players, but for the Abandonian Frequent Quiz Players, each screenshot does not always seem obvious, since the games are not only of 1 genre, but that mixes elements of other secondary genres. :sick: :hairpull:

Don't worry Mystvan, you are still far ahead of me in the PoE rankings. There is obviously an element of luck in our PoE gains and a few weeks ago the system didn't accept my correct answers for severel days in a row, so you got a big lead. At the moment I am slowly closing the gap, but in the long run you still have a better PoE average than me :)

I have the photo of my 03 cats (I own 08 cats, 07 females and 01 male) when they were still puppies. I beg to differ because I speak from my own experience. There are very methodical, organized, and perfectionate people like me who can be dominated by their habits, rituals. :vader: :starwars:

And this can result in a very high self-demand, upsetting yourself and others demanded by your demands. In the long run, this leaves the person well exhausted. :hairpull: :wall:

Quite often the quiz reminds me of a game I've forgotten about, or at least make me take a close look at a game I wasn't aware of. It's a daily pleasant distraction :smile2:

My first "real" job was working at Games and Gadgets, which became Electronics Boutique which then became GameStop (ugh) and that was in 1985 so I've been in the computer business for over 33 years starting June 1st ... yikes ... LOL

As a side note, my present hobby and passion is Autocross, where as fate would have it, one of the top guys in my sport is Andy Hollis of Microprose fame. I introduced myself to him at the nationals one year and we spent some time waxing poetic of the good old days of the C-64

At 6 PoE per day it's possible to make 2.000 per year, and many of the Top-Listers aren't active anymore, so it is quite possible to climb further in the ranks. All you need is patience. So let's hope abandonia will exist for some more years :-)
