Review and Download (if available)

I for one believe religion is a silly business, but this game is so ridiculous I simply had to download it and witness the pixelated power of god.
It's pretty bad, but still enjoyable for 10 minutes or so before I need to go back to my usual gaming habbits.
The power of Christ compels me...:wall:

first, my opinion (sorry): if you do not like religious games, dont play them. Its like tv. noone is forcing you to watch violence, sex, or religion. There are dozens of channels and, as a final solution, there is an actual off button.

Otherwise, I do like games that challenge my knowledge. There are many games here that ask questions about history and geography or zoology and such. They ask for facts however, like "what colour is this animal", "when was this war" or "where lies the place x". I believe there even is a game somewhere where you visit all the spots that are important in the bible and have to answer questions on what happened there.

They do not however ask for an -interpretation-. They do not ask you to explain this event or those texts. My problem in this game is that they give a version of interpretation of biblical texts and present them as true, while even within christianity there is no complete consensus on every meaning

Keeping that out of the picture, combat isnt too imaginative, nor is it a very famous, popular or otherwise distinctive game. At least, not from what i read or tried myself. What i question most of all is the score of 5 out of 5.

The game is about the bible, but mostly about the text, so original. You're in a world with high tech stuff and robots but you use a sword (spirit), right. You have to convinve the council, probably with the same verses, or at least a limited number of them, so low replayability. Combat sounds and seemed, as mentioned, slightly boring after you get the hang of it.

from the review: sound and graphics are good, granted. Teaching valuable lessons and truths, debatable, as shown extensively and exhaustively before this. So, 1 point for grahics, 1 for sound, 1/2 for moral teachings (please dont go in there) still doesnt make a 5 to me
____________
edit: I forgot the score on originality (that includes the verses you choose), so make it a 3

Capo 11-11-2009 05:11 PM

5/5 ? Mmmmm, dont agree.

Oskatat 11-11-2009 07:32 PM

i think we all (almost all) agree that 5/5 is too much. At least 1 thing to agree on!

by the way, isnt it supposed to be called an abomination of a thread and not an abortion of one? you might start the next debate right there! ;) :p

Lulu_Jane 11-11-2009 08:09 PM

Hehehe hopefully not :D

I just got informed that there will be no festivities at the end of this year. Somebody already stole Hanukkah because we were occupied with arguing about HIM.

It's pretty hard to talk about this game without mentioning religion, it is a religious game after all!

I thought this game looked pretty cool! Although games like this and christian rock probably do more damage to christianity than Monty Pithon and Ned Flanders put together :(

I actually found it hard to tell if the reviewer was being sarcastic with his "teaches valuable truths" comment! :)

The statement is offensive because it insists the beleifs of cristianity are TRUE, rather than merely opinions, but this is the basis for all religions.

I actually think it is nice that we can talk about religion, politics etc and not be arrested, burned at the stake or whatever for our opinions. To that end I suggest not deleting the posts, as that would itself be an act of gross intolerence, and against free speech, of which the internet is a wonderfull proponent, which we, as non chinese, take forgranted.

I actually though about making a bhuddist game once, then I realised it would suck, and put people off the religion in much the same way games like the subject of this post do :P . Just look at the inflamed response!

This is actually quite an interesting game. Such games are rare and should be preserved if only for thier curiosity value.

Although it seems like a barefaced attempt at converting the masses, someone might have thought it would be nice to have a game the children of devout christian parents could play, that would teach them about their religion.

And it is worth remembering that the creators of such games mean well. They where not trying to hurt anyone, and neither was the uploder.

God bless :)

Captain Bible needs a spunky, bubbly, sidekick!

No two ways about it, Captain Bible is simply awesome, for entirely unintentional reasons. The enjoyment I get from playing this game is en par with what I experience from watching “Plan 9 From Outer Space”: the cheese factor is incalculable.

I love that the Bible Corps is composed entirely of rugged, beautifully sculpted, bible-waving myrmidons, decked out in body-hugging white spandex (that does NOTHING to hide their juicy pythons) en-suite with a playful little blue chiton and cape… Phew. There’s no avoiding it: Captain B is unrepentantly sexy. :lust:

With that said, it gets really, really addictive watching Captain B sprint, guileless and gazelle-like, down endless cold, metal corridors, downloading choice passages into his computer bible. I caught myself reading each passage aloud and anticipating which CYBER-LIES to use them against… Man, if Fred Phelps dressed as fabulously as Captain B, he could sell me anything! Joking.

I half-agree with The_Lemming’s review regarding “valuable truths and lessons.” It is important for kids to “love thy neighbour” and not burn books or give in to peer pressure. However, I am amused whenever the game makes oblique, sideways jabs at other religions…

I haven’t played it that far, admittedly, but the very first brainwashed city councilwoman you rescue is discovered in a dark, candle-lit room bowing to a graven image and intoning “Ohm… Ohm…” She doesn’t break out into full-on “Shaanti-Shaanti-Shaanti” or anything, but once the councilwoman informs Captain B that she is, in fact, worshipping the “reincarnated Jesus Christ” and Captain B chides her for the folly of believing in reincarnation, the obvious implication is “Hinduism and Buddhism is WRONG, kids!” I’m prepared to accept that I may be leaping to conclusions… But not really.

And does anyone out there know precisely who the bespectacled man in the painting (decked out in a lamb-skin, overt puzzle-hint) is supposed to be? Gandhi? Jim Jones? The lead-designer’s father-in-law? Gandhi? Gandhi? It’s Gandhi, isn’t it? Did Gandhi ever self-identify as a false-Christ? Hmm…

There seem to be no overt swipes at the Judeo-Islamic traditions (besides one CYBER-LIE sounding something like “It’s okay to worship God but not Jesus…”) and I’ve yet to encounter a cyber that tries to “deceive” me with the idea that gays DON’T all burn in hell, or that the crusades were WRONG, or that it’s OKAY to eat fish on a Friday… Thus far, the game is relatively innocent on that score. Again, I haven’t played it all the way through.

I think I’m going to keep playing this game, because, with apologies, it is funny as hell. How can it not be funny, plowing your Sword of the Spirit into the tender vitals of evil, evil and deceitful cybers? It’s like watching an episode of “Father Ted” only where all the jokes are dead-pan and self-serious. Captain Bible seems to be a pretty harmless game, as well. It’s certainly way better than if there were some kind of Captain Mormon computer game out there, with the player charging around fighting the “Children of Cain”… Ahem.

Basically, I’m really, really glad this game was uploaded. It’s important that little gems like this are rediscovered, and that people be allowed to play them. It’s important for gamers, today, to know that over a decade ago a group of men and women felt the need to create a game to teach people that, among other things, “resurrection” is possible but that “reincarnation” is somehow bogus. Fifteen years from now, when “Left Behind” becomes abandonware, gamers should be free to play that as well. To play it and, if need be, laugh.

Haha, Liberace!

Nice commentary. And there's a term we have for crappy MoralAlternative stuff like this: "Jesus Junk".

Frankly, I think God gets really embarrassed when people do things like this on His behalf. Or the Inquisition. Stuff like that. :wall:

But nice, balaced commentary. Abandonia is all about keeping old games alive. It doesn't matter what they contain, really, there's something for everyone.

Except horrible Buddhists. (jk)

I'm actually trying to find the full version of this? Does anybody know where to get it? I stubled across this forum while looking for it.

Yes I'm a Christian and I believe the Bible, but I don't see this as a propaganda game. I think the intent of the game was for Christian parents & leaders to teach their own children & students. I would not take offense. Nobody is forcing it on you.

I am not a gamer, but I was looking for computer games that teach scripture. The thing that stood out about this game is it teaches to apply scripture rather than rote learning random verses without thinking about their meaning. I cannot find any equivalent sort of game that is more recent. Most of the games are quite superficial, they don't really teach much. I am a teacher and quite fussy about this.

Anyway, the organization that owns the copyright doesn't seem to have it anymore.

Oh, I didn't realise you had a link to it on your website, thank you. My son had been previously playing the limited edition which seemed to be the only one available elsewhere. Now to get it working without the MIDI playing up... Works with the music off, but when you go to the first game level it goes to the black screen & gets out of the game. I've tried all the different MIDI options and it does the same thing. I also notice that when you turn music off, it simply stops MIDI instructions, so any notes that have not stopped continue to play. Is this a bug with the game or is there some setting up I can do?

The Fifth Horseman 02-01-2010 10:05 PM

I'd say the problem lies somewhere between the fact this game was originall released for DOS and the lousy backwards compatiblity of any given Windows version.

Probably the problem can be resolved by running the game through DOSBox.
For a rudimentary guide on what that is and how to operate it, check this link: http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=14406

Much appreciated. I will try this.

Some helpful tips...

Yes, you'll need Dosbox...and just drag and drop "CB.exe" over top of "dosbox.exe" and it should be functional. If there's no sound, download Vdmsound and drag and drop it over top of "setsnd.bat"; and then, drag "cb.exe" over top of "dosbox.exe" and it should then be fully functional--with sound and effects.

A note to the critics; there are actually other "religious" games that are on the market. I do remember specifically reading of one on Mobygames that taught children hinduism and also, speaking of Hinduism, my mind is flashing images of the game "Nirvana" and another game where you had to navigate through a maze and rescue different incarnations of Vishnu before the time clock ran out (or before the bad guy got 'im, can't remember which at the moment).

So Captain Bible isn't the ONLY religious game that's out there...

And oh, one last thing...

I Am Alive makes mention of an earthquake god; should we label IT propaganda too? If it IS some kind of propaganda game, then I'd say it would be a massive promotional for bottled water. :3:

I mean...think about it; three guys chasing a scrawny kid around for some water (and not just ANY water but BOTTLED too)?

You know what I think it is? I think it's a CONSPIRACY!

:omg:

But I digress...

Here are some helpful tips in playing the game:

1. Take advantage of every opportunity to upload your computer Bible with verses at the little blue scripture stations. You will see why later.
2. In every level, there is a victim you must rescue; however, they are guarded by different cybers and it is these cybers you must take on and defeat if you hope to win the game.
3. When you confront each cyber [robot], they will present you with a lie which you must counter with the appropriate Bible verse. Once you have applied the appropriate verse, you will switch into battle mode; while in battle mode, it is VERY important to remember that each cyber attacks and defends itself differently; find out how they attack and defend themselves and use that knowledge to your advantage! (Note that you will hit harder and defend yourself better if you obtain the shield of faith and the sword of the spirit; more on obtaining these later). In closing, look closely at your opponent as some are similar, but attack differently based on the markings on their "outer shell" (ie macho cybers with "Y" on eye-lid shoot spiked stars out of their eye, others without that marking don't).
4. Prayer chapels are important as this is where your "faith meter" is restored (click on it at any time to find out what percentage it is at). To obtain the Sword of the Spirit and Shield of Faith icon, you must have the appropriate verses in order to obtain them (so if you ask for the shield of faith, you must have the Bible verse that deals with the shield of faith).
On this note, it is important to mention...the dark hallways; you MUST have the candle icon! I cannot stress this enough! You MUST have it!
5. Finally, once you've soundly beaten those evil cybers up, you must then deal with the victim; now, each victim is different and is dealing with different issues so different Bible verses and different approaches are necessary if you're going to deal with each victim correctly. I'll let you figure that all out for yourself though (I don't want to tell you everything!)
6. There are other "special" things that you will discover as you play the game; the jump room, the leech cyber, the special level where you can fly, the uni...oops!

Don't want to tell you everything!

:)

So there you have it...

Enjoy!

I played this game years ago when I was little... I remember the 'bosses' used to scare me... especially the guy in the sheepskin and the guy with all the tubes coming out of him :)

Lol; I remember them all too well.

I see no difference between this game and say, um, Bio Menace. This game suffers from a "bad' Storyline but it certainly isn't the first....or last!

michaeltheangeldude 30-07-2012 05:02 AM

Where's the study guide that comes with the game? There was like a readme file that had all the answers to the lies

BloodlustSweden 14-09-2013 09:33 PM

I never thought i would actually disagree with a review on this site...was i ever wrong.. 5/5? No fo'ing way! "Teaches valuable truths and lessons"? uh...if you mean the whole religious stuff, i have no choice but to call you an idiot.... <.<

The Fifth Horseman 15-09-2013 04:19 PM

For the game's intended audience, it does.
Anyone else is unlikely to touch this title with a ten foot pole, so *shrug*

twillight 29-12-2014 12:07 PM

I say this game is fenomenal, although I too can't decide if this was a serious attempt, or just a sarcasm. For example noone can seriously say rainbows are not just light reflected by water in the atmosphere, because that it is.

Otherwise the graphic is nice, the gameplay is smooth...
Than came the problems.

First, the saves. In case you die you just restart from the nearest chapel. BUT all the trap-rooms are re-activated too. Not that I ever seen a trap-room which had two entrances, still... The stuff stay dead if you properly reload. Any cyber on corridors stays dead either way.

Second, the actual fights.
Matching/countering the phrases are good way to learn some skill of understanding texts. This is still true if you don't accept the interpretation of the texts.
But the actual sword-shield battle is just too fast. Defense is a must, but there is no time to get cover when the attack started. And it is though trial&error to figure out when you are supposed to attack (each time a specific animation must happen).

Third thing is, I got stuck. There are 4 ways to go at the moment to try to go, but neither of my phrases work anywhere. I suspect to blame the random engine for this, and is permanent.

This pre-installed package is locked to only the New International version of the Bible's verses. With a clean installation, we will be able to access different versions.
