Red Fortress The guy who made this came across an LP on Something Awful, and was so happy he decided to start working on the game again.

The games is now freeware, and is being updated with bug fixes!!!

Mushrooms are far from useless, although an oddity. Each gives 5 mana on the cost of 5 health.

Btw, thx for the tip on the rogue. Now we know 2 class' special ability!

Also thx for clearing the issue of sneak and thieving tools.

Tips

I haven't been able to finish the first quest completely yet, But I have learned a few things.

-apparently food meter affects health regen, and water affects mana.

-the rouge jumps exceptionally high, and runs faster. As a result the effect of overburdening is less noticable

-For some reason you can't sell runes, so if you can't use them pitch em.

-As far as I can tell there is no reason not to store all your money in the bank.

-It is easier to hit with swiping weapons, (Swords and axes) than with stabbing ones like the knife or staff.

-The thieves tools let you steal things from enemies that don't know your there, sneak up behind and attack with it. You might get money.

-You can sell mushrooms, Hoard the useless things and cash in.

Incidentally, after I shot the elf on the other side, I managed to jump across at the point where the river comes out of the gorge!!!
Found anything good? Healing potions, scrolls and armor / weapon pieces worth good, so I'd be interrested (I'd prefer to buy the two movement-enchancing rings as soon as possible).

twillight From sheer curiosity I finished the first level of this game. So some final tips (if I'll have other things to report, I'll open a topic in the Gaming Zone):

- You can go to town (shop) / save at every level's (called "map" by the game) end. The first quest has 5 maps.
- Time is not running while you are in town.
- Whatever you do in town is automatically saved.
- If you hit Esc twice you quit from the current part of the mission. This equalls with a reload. A good trick is to keep the "identify all" scroll from the starting equipment, kill all opponent on the level, go back for all items, finish the level, start a new level, use the identify scroll, check all your new belongings, then abort mission, and sell all things you don't need.
- The consequence of death is loosing all the money you have on you.
- During the first map it is random from the elves to drop either a copper or a quiver. For each quiver you get 1 silver(!) in the shop.
- Corpses decay, items do not.
- Poison is not that big of a problem. But at the final switch beware, the pedestal of fire is dangerous.

Here is the solution:
Before starting the quest buy a Potion of Waterwalking (costs 2 Gold in the Store, too bad you can't afford the Ring of Waterwalking from the Bank). Let the river wash you down, get the items (there is a note, a crossbow, a scroll what gives 1500 exp and more, so it worth the 2 Gold), shoot down the elf on the other side (he is on an unreachable platform, but worth exp), then drink the potion you bought, and walk back.
The potion's duration is ca. 1 minute.

I can't offer a walkthrough (not even a guide exist anywhere), but here are some tip about character-creation:
- you can only choose the class. You can't even change the portrait. The class determines the starting equipment (food, scrolls, potions, weapon, armor) and inventory of shops.
- all class has the same amount of statpoints (what you can't modify), except the Citizen, who has 20 more points.
- stealth is a useless stat, and magic is difficult to use.
- only the Knight has special ability (higher melee damage). The Knight also starts with chain equipment instead of leather (and he also has helm). The archer starts with a bow and lots of arrows (still limited resource and weak damage) along a melee weapon. The rogue, the mercenary and the magician starts with "thieving tools" (no idea what it does, looks like lockpick).
- health seems to regenerate.
- food and water can't be sold in shop.
- you wear gloves on both of your hands!
- you can check your stats, equipment etc. during pause.

I took a quick install and a peek, so some info:
- you can't save or go to town while questing
- I think you can go back after the river smashed you if you RUN (hold shift).
- the way out is marked with 2 crystal balls (hidden by trees, but they are there). The door is closed until you finish the quest objective (aquiring the Book of Visions) I guess.

Some tips:
magic system is annoying. You won't be a battlemage, so either go some kind of priest (they have some healing spells and an "open door" spell), or just use the Knight for melee damage. Ranged weapons sound nice, but they use ammunition, what I'd not trust.
The food-system seems silly as I've found plenty of food (but no water).
Identify items is a built-in ability what incrises by leveling up. I don't know what other results levellin has.
To know wether a piece of armor worth it or not just try to wear it and watch the statistics.
I have no idea how to tell which weapon is better.
