Thanks for the help! I found the file I was supposed to use. Sorry for the questions, but do you happen to know if the game really requires a disk to save? I tried to save, but I only got an error.
Thank you, again. =)
I am shocked nobody addressed this:
1. Open the folder containing all the game files.
2. Right-click on crime.sav
3. Left-click on properties
4. At the bottom where it says attributes, remove the check from "read-only"
Ridiculous....

Hi,
with the help of mobygames I've found out about a German version of the game.
The big question follows immediately
Does anyone of you perhaps have the german version of "Crime City" and could share it with me?
Thanks.

Thanks!
Then I played this game the first time, I thought all those questions would get answered and that I had many more hours of game time.
It was a huge anticlimax then I went to the police with the gun, and suddenly the game was completed.
Another thing that irritates me about Crime city is all the choices you can make, that don’t change anything.
One of those things is your skills. Lock picking and surveillance is needed during the game. But no matter if your skills are 1 or 9, your changes of success seems to be the same. As a matter of fact it’s not even relevant if you do fail. Just try to pick the lock again.
Also it doesn't make any difference if you follow someone for 2 hours or 4 or 6 or 8. So why even give the player the choice?
You can also improve your first aid, fighting and crime rate. But there is absolutely no place in the game where you can even use those skills.
Also your intelligence, charm, energy, moral etc is changing during the game. Firstly, they seem to change randomly without any connection to what you are doing. Secondly, this makes absolutely no difference.
The game is full of things like this. You can break up with your girlfriend, confess a murder, vandalize the church. And nothing of it will affect anything. Your moral doesn't change, not your intelligence. And the game won’t take a new dicertion.
If you break up with your girlfriend, you can just walk outside her house and then go back in. And everything will be just like before. You can make plans with her for a time at the pub, but she will not be there, and none of you will ever say anything about it.
Whenever you follow a person, he or she will always do the same thing. Phil always get a phone call and drive away in his car in big hast. Even then his dead, he keeps doing this if you decide to follow him around. If someone catches you following him or her, it has absolutely no effect. Just follow them again until they don't see you.
What's the point in giving the player a lot of options and ways to develop the character, if is has nothing to do with the game?
One other thing...
The game is really, really easy. Whenever you get stucked, you can just visit any of the 11 screens, and talk to everybody in them. Then dial all the numbers. If that doesn't give you a new path, just click "next day" and you will get a letter.
The only reason the game might take some time is because of silly things like how you find Gordon’s house. You must go back and look at a document that you have already looked at. Things like that can get you stucked, but not in a funny way like if there was a hard puzzle to solve. Just in a ridiculous, buggy kind of way.
Besides all that, the game really entertained me then I first played it as a kid. One reason is that it's very easy to control. After only five minutes you know exactly how to play.
Another reason is actually the limited numbers of screens. Since they are so few, you don't get bored of clicking at everything. For example, then I played Sherlock Holmes. There was a new place all the time. And after a while I wasn't excited then I found a new room to investigate. It felt more like a "job" to go through all the clicking and reading in every new place.
Crime city keeps up the excitement every time you find a new screen, and you are happy to search it through.
In Crime city you don't even have to chose "open" or "use" or "look" etc. The game does what’s needed with the object you click at. This also makes the clicking and reading part less boring.
Crime city also got a really nice graphic and sound. All the places are interesting to visit. The church, pub, police station etc. There's something in the atmosphere that got me hooked.
I have really god memories of this game, but it is one of those that didn't stand the time very well.
(Sorry for the spell and grammars. I’m from Sweden).

SPOILER:
For you folks who have problems at the police station.
The officer needs one, and ONLY one suspect. He also needs to see the murder-weapon and the computer disk.
Sometimes you have all this, but the officer still keeps saying that you can't have two or three suspects. This is a bug in the game, that for some reason doesn't remove the other suspects from the list. Even after you have found out that they are innocent.
To avoid this. Do not tell the officer that you can prove your fathers innocence during the game. Wait until you have all evidence above.
The game has a few glitches. For example, Patricia (your mother) tells you about David’s affair with an "unknown girl". But then you ask Dave at the pub about this, your question is: "Do you know anything about David’s affair with Debbie". (How are you supposed to know her name?)
SPOILER ABOUT THE STORY:
This game has some really huge gaps in the plot.
Henrys friend David was murdered because he had a photograph of Jason (who is working at Stancrow) and Bill (who is working at TechnoLogique).
The photograph shows Bill giving Jason a secret document that he had stolen from his own work.
Gordon (who owns Stancrow) had hired the hitman Phil to murder David and destroy the photograph.
Why is David having this photograph? And how does he know that he is about to die, and tells Henry about the safe-code?
And why did the hitman Phil got murdered after he murdered David. By who?
Gordon is then hiring another hitman (Nick) to murder Bill. Why? Why did Bill suddenly have to die? And why wasn't Gordon happy with the hitman Phil? Why did he have to murder him, and find another one, named Nick?
And why is Nick standing outside Bills room at the hospital for a whole day before he enters and murder the poor guy? Why do they send Bill to a hospital first, and THEN murder him?
As someone have already stated, there is also completely ridiculous how Henry could be arrested in the first place. There was no evidence against him at all, besides the fact that he and David had an argument.
Still, the very same officers aren’t even satisfied then you give then the murder weapon you found inside Phil’s house. Oh no... That’s not enough evidence against the convicted hitman... Henry is the murderer... he was the one who had an argument...

Here is a hopefully thorough Crime City walkthrough
CRIME CITY WALKTHROUGH
David Walker - the deceased
June Walker - his wife
Henry White - your father - accused of the murder
Patricia White - your mother
Steven White - you
Walkthrough
You start in your dad's office. Click the letter next to your computer to find out that Derek Smith, the realtor, is allowing you to keep your father's private eye business for 2 months.
On your bulletin board is a letter from Derek Smith to your father confirming their rental agreement, a wonderful mail order book opportunity, a list of rules, a reminder to your father to pick up his wife at the chemists, and a note that Compubyte BBS has closed down.
Your dad's diary says Monday - got a phone call about case meeting tomorrow. Tuesday - meeting went well, surveillance tomorrow. Wednesday - nothing came from the surveillance. Thursday - dinner with David. Saturday - weekend at David's.
You may click the computer and click Records... to read about the 5 main characters in the story if you wish. Nothing huge in there, just kind of helps you get your teeth into the story by getting to know the people.
Click the map and go to the crime scene (David's office). Click the chalk outline, the cigar butt on the floor to the left, the open drawer, the crime figure graph, the cupboard (it's locked), and the painting (reveals a safe and you don't know the combination yet). Click the door to leave. Go to the police station. Ask the officer on duty to let you see your father.
Ask your father about the murder. He tells you they had an argument that day and he went back to patch things up. Ask him what the last thing he said was. He kept saying - Make sure my birthday is safe (kind of a LAME way to say David's birthday is the combination to his safe isn't it?). Ask about the argument. He'll say David got drunk and obnoxious. Your father said he got angry and said he wished David was dead. Now he knows that was stupid! Ask him where you can get some help and he'll tell you to go to the pub and ask the barman where Dave is. You can socialize with him if you want. Click "see you later dad" when you're done. You can talk to the officer more if you want. Click the back doors to leave when you're done. We'll go check out Dave later - right now let's get that safe open!
Go to your dad's office. Click the computer and click Records, then click David Walker. His birthday is 01/02/43 (actually it seems to be random). Wow, he and your dad were partners for 12 years!
Click the map and go back to the crime scene. Click the safe and type (surprise, surprise) 010243 (or whatever his birthday is). You find some negatives and a key. Click the cupboards. Surprise, surprise - it opens! You find 120 pounds in cash. I guess it's okay to be a burglar when you're a detective! Now, the negatives. Remember seeing that patricia (your mom) is a chemist on the bulletin board? I guess you're supposed to assume that all chemists know how to develop photos - interesting huh?
Okay, let's go see your mom. At HOME. Ask her to develop the film for you. She tells you it'll take a couple days. Ask her about David and his family. She tells you she knows it wasn't your father who killed him and she feels worse for June - it was their anniversary next week. Ask her about David's wife. They've put her on tranquilizers - she's like a zombie staring out the window. Tell her about the cigar. She tells you that neither David nor your father smoked. Someone else must have been there because Elsie the cleaner cleans the office at night. Ask her about Elsie. She comes in at 6pm every day and cleans that whole office. Socialize with your mom if you wish that tell her goodbye.
Go see your girlfriend and ask her for a date. Tomorrow (July 4th) at 7pm in the pub.
Go to the pub. Ask the bartender for information. He'll tell you talk to Dave who will be sitting right there. Dave at this point just tells you a bunch of general stuff but has no useful information at that moment.
You can just waste time until 7:30am July 5th at this point (your girlfriend doesn't show up at the bar!!!). Every now and then when you go to the church the vicar is actually there but that's not important to the game yet. An envelope will appear next to your computer with a photo in it. Wait until 11am and go to the pub to talk to Dave. Ask him about the photo. He'll tell you that someone named Phil Wilkinson had been asking about some negatives and seemed worried about them. Ask him about Phil - he's a hitman! Single bullet to the head is his style. Recommends you keep an eye on him. Go to your office computer and look up Phil in records. Quite a record this dude has! Do surveillance for 2 hours. He'll drive away very anxiously. Click "next day".
Another letter appears with a newspaper article that Phil Wilkinson is dead - found in a river! Go to the morgue. Click the tag to get a number. Go back out to the nurse and ask to see the report. cause of death - accidental drowning. location of death - bridge. comments - bruise on back of neck.
The bridge will now be a location. Go there by taxi. There seems to be a matchbox in the middle of the grass - Phil 248656. Go back to your office and call that number. Phil's girlfriend will answer. Ask where to find Phil and she'll invite you to come over and wait and give the address. Say goodbye and Phil will appear as a location. Go there.
Paper by the door - Tim Smith 85 North St,. Andy Fayre, 13 The Retreat, Jeff Harrison 12 the Backs, Jane Side 10 the backs, Stancrowe Int. 3 Cambridge Walk, Simon Floss 1 Anian Path, Gordon Chambers The Cottage, Westway, David Morter 42 Bovel Pass, Les Brown 53 Stanley Rd, Lucy Emhater 21 TangSide
Letter on the floor: Graddells Bank Tel 271615 112 High Street Acct no 04172526 $2000 deposit on 15/5/91, 285 withdrawl 17/5/91
Phone: Beep Phil it's me. This is very urgent, there has been a major problem. Meet me at the bridge on forest road at 8pm. Come alone. Beep uh it's Jeff Harrison, I've got hold of that nightsight you wanted. Call me at 667183.
Go back to the pub and ask Dave if he found anything new. He says the police computer's first level code is 943862 INPC
Go back to your office, the computer, click tellecommunications and police computer level 1. All it tells you is that autodownloading is on at this point.
Call Jeff Harrison. Tell him a friend recommended him. He'll invite you to his place. Go there. You can get training from him but I don't know how important it is at his point. At this point you can wait until the next day.
You'll get a letter from John Heggardy who was a friend of your father. George Evans was arrested by David 5 years ago and swore to kill him when he got out. He was released 2 days before David's death. John recommends sending someone ELSE to go see him. Let's see, who would do anything for you? Your mother? nope, too busy. Go talk to your girlfriend. she'll go visit him for you. Then go back to your office and read the records about George Evans. The church still isn't much help!
I wasn't able to see much until July 10th at 7:30. I got a letter. George's number is 268543, Lisa (that's your girlfriend's name!) 771843.
Call George. You'll find out that his son was killed by a hit and run driver. The night of the murder he was in the hospital. His son was in a coma. His wife or the doctors can corroborate his alibi. Call your girlfriend to check up on him.
On July 11th you get a letter about a new BBS. I tried to download VirusWipe and got a file error. I tried to call the board owner and got voice mail.448971 and 661712 were the numbers for the board owner and some top secret company that lost a secret. Techno Logique, the research and development company have lost important secret documents. These are believed to have been stolen, possibly by an inside person. Very little more information has been released because of the importance of the documents. The press release stated that if these documents were to get into foreign hands, it could mean many years of secret research could be wasted, and could be a possible future risk to national defence. If you have any news, call Techno Logique.
July 12th I went to Jeff, borrowed 400 pounds from him and trained 2 levels of surveillance.
I did a next day until July 13th . There's a letter from Dave with a newspaper clipping that the other guy in the photo was arrested for passing forged checks. He says he'd look him up before he gets put in jail. I do 2 hours of surveillance several times before I actually see something happen. Jason is a small time crook with aspirations waay too high. From what you've seen of him, his role model is Al Capone. He tries to talk with an american accent, but fails. He has a soft spot for drink and women, and both have the same effect on him, less money, and no long term good comes from it. He works for Stancrowe Int doing odd jobs now and then. While following Jason Peters you are abducted and taken to a back alley and beaten up. Then you are warned to forget trying to find the real murderer. If you don't then someone close to you will get hurt. When they have left you think about giving up, but decide that more than ever you must free your father.
Go warn your mother about the attack. She'll tell you she has some news. David is gossipped to have had an affair with this girl, and it could have been the girl's husband who killed him. She and father don't know who she is.
Next day (the 14th), Dave knows she is Debbie Brown. Doesn't think husband knew about affair. New police computer code - DEPC.
Do 8 hours of surveillance on Debbie. Her husband is chief of police. She also likes to flirt with men. Her phone # is 537854.
Debbie says that your father said it was HE who had the affair with Debbie (it was really David), so Debbie's husband would want to kill Henry not David. Besides, my husband didn't want to lose me and begged me to stay. Didn't mind if I had the affair if I was honest.
Go ask your father about David's affair. David was upset about a death during a bank raid. Admits to covering for him. David stumbled upon a bank raid one day and the raiders panicked and took a hostage. Later the body of the hostage was found in a alleyway. The brother of the dead boy blamed David for the death and wanted justice. The brother's name is Simon Hews, he could be a possible suspect.
Do 2 hours of surveillance on him. You followed Simon and it seems he is married with a young child. You get his address. Go talk to him. he says he was dressed as a carrot selling popcorn at the time of the murder. When you go to church the vicar can't claim to have seen his face. But David's wife did.
Do a next day until July 16th and you get two letters - one a guy named Ian who is a friend of David's who needs a favor, his # is 754563, and your girlfriend is home. Call Ian. He asks you to delete his file. Use Telecommuncations to delete it. Call him back and he gives you the name Bill Warschlock.
You leave your office just in time to see a car crash deliberately into your girlfriend's car as she is returning from her holiday. you call an ambulance and she is rushed to hospital. You travel with her but she is unconscious.
You do 2 hours surveillance on Bill. Bill works for Techno Logique. His job is in cleaning and maintenance of the computers, he also writes software for some of the big shots at the company. You also find out later that he owes some money to the wrong type of people. The last thing you heard about him was that he has not been seen for the last couple of days.
Call Techno Logique. You'll find out that his home phone # is 578913. Call it and Martha (I guess his wife) tells you he's in A1 at the hospital. You go to the hospital and between clicking on the door and talking to the nurse, Bill gets killed. There's a note there - Nick Hobson, can you deal with Bill for me? Gordon.
I had to do 2 hours of surveillance twice on Nick Hobson. It seems he works indirectly for Stancrowe Int. He has visited there a few times and the people there call him by his first name. You followed him into the lift once to the top offices where he went to the end, the directors office. Also there was an incident where a police car went past and he ducked into a shop.
You need training on lockpicking from Jeff before going to Stancrowe. Level 6.
I got beat up and taken to the hospital the morning of the 19th.
You need to go in at midnight and may need to try more than once. It can take FOREVER to get in there!!!!
Once you're in - click the wastebasket. A note: Phil, Can you deal with Mr Walker for me? The usual arrangements. Gordon C. DON'T TOUCH THE LIGHT!!!! The safe is locked.
Look back at the list of addresses next to the door of Phil's house. One of them is Gordon Chambers. Could that be Gordon C? Of course! Now Gordon will appear on the map. Wait until nighttime and break in from the front. Again, this may take many tries. All you need is a key in a shoe. Then you get to try to break into Stancrowe AGAIN - fun fun. In the safe you find a computer disk, 300 pounds in cash, a police file on the murder and a bank statement dealing a 2000 pound transaction to Phil.
Go back to your office and go back to the computer. Click Run Disk. It will be contaminated with Viruses. Try to download the virus software from ProByte BBS. It's not there! Call the BBS owner. It may take several tries. He'll agree to send you the software.
While you're waiting, your girlfriend should be awake by now. Go to the hospital. You'll find out that George Evans was telling the truth.
The next day you should get an envelope with the VirusWipe program. Go to your computer and run it. Then run the disk. It's a LaserNet with Optical Tracking to a range of 500 miles accurate to 1/100th of an Inch - cool, huh?
Next thing you need to prove Phil is the killer and Gordon paid him is the murder weapon. Go talk to Jeff and ask him where Phil may have hidden the gun. He'll tell you to look places again. Go to Phil's house. The gun's in the flowerpot.
Go to the police - assuming you've talked to your girlfriend, your father should be freed!

I have played this game to the point where I got the diskette, removed the virus from it, and presented it to the cops. However, they tell me I have three suspects.
Phil Wilkinson
George Evans
Simon Hews
For some reason, George isn't removed from the list even though the girlfriend of the detective in the game says his alibi checks out. Also, Simon isn't removed even though David's wife said he was at the church in a carrot suit at the time it happened. So it mainly leaves Phil, whom is dead, but I know it isn't him since it has to be Gordon Chambers but I can't link him to anything other than the fact that his name is on the piece of paper at Phils, and he has a key to the Stancrowe safe. The gun at Phils was found. I guess that's the murder weapon, but now I can't figure out how to proceed since. The walkthrough is no help since it says to look at the floppy disk, talk to Jeff about the weapon, which I did and found, and to present the evidence to the police. The final part says to talk to the girlfriend of the detective to get the last bit of evidence to clear up things. Yet, after that I still have those three people as suspects.
I got the VirusClean from the BBS owner even though the walkthrough fails to mention that you should do this in order to view the plans from the Techno Logique on the diskette.
I am running this game in DosBox. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I actually BOUGHT this game in the early 90s - it was part of a 6-CD Value Pack that included Ultima I-VI on CD - I couldn't believe I could actually buy all 6 Ultimas for $20!!!! I installed Crime City and didn't get very far - it wasn't until I found the hints on the net that I was able to solve it.
The game was actually pretty good. I like games that you don't have to spend 10 years learning how to play before you play it, and this was a reasonably simple and immersive world. I liked the music actually - I felt it added to the experience.
Anyway, one of my major complaints, unless I'm missing something, is what was the connection between Gordon Chambers and David Walker? I figured out that Gordon hired Phil to kill David, and I guess the insinuation was that it was Gordon who stole the files from Techno Logique. I SUPPOSE we're to assume that David Walker was investigating the crime and was getting too close. But there were so many unanswered questions:
Who the bleep was Bill Warschlock?
Who were the two guys in the photo?
What were they doing?
Why was David Walker taking that picture?
How did Gordon Chambers know to frame Henry White for the murder?
What was the evidence against Henry White other than the argument? How could they even ARREST him, let alone CONVICT him, without a MURDER WEAPON?
Did they ever even SAY what exactly the date and time of the murder was? I guess you're to assume it was July 3rd (since the game starts July 4th) sometime after 6pm.
Bill Warshlock - just a name out of nowhere, he works for TechnoLogique and Gordon Chambers has Nick Hobson kill him. Following Nick led to Gordon Chambers's office.
Again, I guess the assumption is David was investigate the TechnoLogique theft and got too close so Gordon had someone take care of him, but I wish they'd connected the dots a bit better.
The "red herring" about the affair with Debbie was a little dumb too. HENRY pretended he had the affair, but Patricia (his wife) only knew about a rumor that DAVID was having the affair? I guess there's just the assumption that David had the affair because he was upset about the botched bank job.
All in all I think they could have done a better job with the story and still fit under the technology constraint they had.
I also hated the tedium of having to play the stock market every day (unless you knew the cheat), and how *(@#(*$@# long it can take to finally break into Stancrowe ---- TWICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and how long it can take to break into Gordon Chambers's house.
Overall I'm glad I finished it but I can't say I'd actually recommend this game to anyone. There are better mystery games out there.
