"Ford Simulator" is not a game at all, it was an early (1989 for v.1) and quite daring attempt to use computer-based mutimedia to support sales of Ford cars. Ford and SoftAd were really pioneering what became later the multimedia marketing industry (demo diskettes, then interactive CD-ROMs, and then the Web).

Ford Simulators were not sold (and Ford never made any money out of them), they were distributed in Ford dealerships to the lucky few test drivers who owned a home computer (a scarce resource at the time). As an interative, official catalogue of Ford cars, they had to be updated once a year, hence the number of versions. I admit that, while v1 seemed visionary in '89, version 5 looked quited dated in '94. The cars had been updated, not the concept

A bit of reasearch on SoftAd would have shown that they are still around and operate now under the name ChannelNet.com. If the name SoftAd is not enough of a hint, their story of early visionaries in the field of PC-based marketing is well known and documented. They have nothing to do with the game industry and never claimed to.
Like as a Ford simulator the other simulators are also very popular for racing . Racing simulators creates the racing environment for gamers. The latest racing simulators is VRX iMotion. It flaunts 3d surround vision across the three screens.

Just a piece of advice - don't stop at the gass station to get a map and look at it. The car will startd automatically turning left (might be a bug).
This bug definitely exists and makes further driving impossible! I've found that after buying a map the car pulls to the extreme left or right!

No thinking involved. Up arrow to accelerate, down to brake, left and right to steer, Space bar to click through menus. Note about driving though - the driving simulation state is ridiculously sluggish. When I was driving, I felt like a drunkard, weaving in and out of the curbs. The car handles like a hippopotamus.
Is this not just an accurate simulation of ford cars

Sebatianos Thanks you for the explenation.

Yes, the presentation of the cars is obvious, but it could also have been done better. This program does also include an interactive driveing sequence - which actually is a game, that's why we clasifyed it as such. As for the reviewer... He only looked at the gaming aspect (as this is a game site and he is a rather young but enthusiastic teenager).

Your point of view seems to be well based on facts, so I'm really very glad you expressed it and I hope more people will read it, to learn more about this program. k:

Sebatianos There are similarities, but Test Drive has much better gameplay. I'd say Ford Simulator 5 is like Test Drive - light. The real problem is the gamplay hasn't actually improved sinse the first game (Which was really good for it's time).

Guest By the way Ford Simulator is comparable with Test Drive 2 but of course you can select only Ford cars.
