So, the game I'm looking for is an old RPG, possibly shareware, that I found on a gaming magazine's CD around 2000.

I remember that at the beginning, you had to pick between a male or a female djinn, (they were green, with pink turbans and such) though I don't recall if that made any impact.
Afterwards, you had to set up your own party or pick one of the premade ones. I remember races such as vampire and giant (maybe ogre?) being selectable. You then selected one of several campaigns (I remember the easiest one had you start off clearing a forest path, and a hard one putting you in the middle of a city with archers firing from the houses) and then buying equipment, with Thor's Hammer being one of the most expensive ones.

Graphically, the game was overhead, tile based with very simplistic look, not too many colors used. Don't remember anything of sound or music.

Hope this rings a bell to any of you.

Hmm, the only games I can think of that somewhat fit your description are the Exile series (http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/productsOld.html) games, Realmz (https://fantasoft.powweb.com/downloads.html) and possibly Helherron (http://web.archive.org/web/20061214102530/http://www2.lut.fi/~akuukka/helherron/main.htm).

I tried all three, but it's neither of those. The graphics were a bit simpler, hence why I assumed it was some shareware game or alike. But still, they are still very much similar!

I remembered another Windows-based shareware RPG (with strategy elements) which possibly matches your description, it's Quad Quest (http://www.datawaregames.com/html/qq.htm) (and also its sequel, Quad Quest II (http://www.datawaregames.com/html/qq2.htm)). You have one main character but also assemble a party of companions, and there are several (four, as the title suggests) quests of varying difficulty in each game.
