I may be hallucinating, since I can't find it anywhere, but I seem to remember I played a game (at least 14-15 years ago): you were in control of a soldier inside a trench (I think it was during WWII), you had a set weapons like machinegun, grenades, bazooka, you could even call for an air strike, and you had to kill the soldier in the other trench in front of yours. I remember that both you and your enemy immediately respawned when killed.

Can't remember anything more - If someone knows the game I'm referring to, I'd be delighted.

Not sure but it sounds badass..Did you try home of the underdogs to search??

Well, I haven't browsed through *every* action game on the site, but I don't think it's there. I also searched in other sites such as dosmuseum.com which has a huge database of shareware titles, but still no luck.

Well, we don't have much shareware games. You can try our sister site Reloaded or some other site that is more into shareware than abandonware. HOTU should also host lot of shareware games AFAIK...

We don't have shareware at Reloaded, Marko. We have FREEWARE. Reloaded was created for freeware games, and AB is supposed to be about abandonware. ;)

I thought you host free parts of shareware games (I'm not sure how to call them, like those free episodes in shareware games, you get the picture...)

We have freeware - fanmade freeware, original games created by gamelovers, and freeware that used to be commercial.

Give slightly more details, samtam99. Current description can relate to anything, from Worms to Quake. :) It is shooter, strategy or RPG? Is it flat, or 3D, or isometric? Could you run around level or sitting in one place? What background exist?

samtam99

I don't remember either Quake or Worms being set in a WWII trench :P

Anyway, no you couldn't wander around the level - there weren't even proper *levels*, you were pretty much stuck inside the trench, being able to move either left or right to avoid enemy attacks. Perspective was neither isometric nor flat - I can provide an example from this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxSvSGkOJR4) NES game which used a similar one: basically, you could see your character from behind.

So, is it something similar to Guy Spy (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/613/Guy+Spy+and+the+Crystals+of+Armageddon.html)?

Looks more like Beach-head (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/beach-head-2000/screenshots) for me. :)

Oh, even better! Check this group (http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/cabal-type-shooters), please? :)

As far as I can see from those pictures, no.

It ain't Operation Wolf. And yes, you could see the trench.

It's far older than Beach Head 2000, I remember playing it in 1996-1997. It isn't among those in that group, either.

Yes, I see that there is not many PC games in group. But is it needed view? "Fixed" soldier at the bottom of screen viewed from back? Or it is more "Beach-head" view, with only gun visible?

"Fixed" soldier at the bottom of screen viewed

This. Not really "fixed", actually, since you could move around horizontally.

Dude! I remember the game you are talking about.

I don't remember the name but funny thing.. On my 486 for some reason after running that game it was like it "overclocked" my CPU and everything ran better.

Pretty weird i know, also the the serial to register that game was in plain text in the exe, just had to look it up using the trusty Norton Commander.

SAM,

Have you found this game yet? My brother and I played it 10 years ago. Now we are searching for it and this thread is the only mention of it I can find on the internet!! If you have found it, please let me know the name.

THANKS!!!

andrew

No, I still haven't found it. Unfortunately I have read supertrini's last reply too late, since the link he posted isn't working anymore (demu.org is currently down) - I have contacted the site owner to ask him whether he knows this game, since I'm pretty sure he has played lots of obscure DOS shareware games (at least judging by the number of games that were indexed in his site).

I'm relieved to see that someone else remembers this game, though, since it means I'm not imagining things :smile2:

No idea whether anyone still cares, but I *think* I've found the game the op is referring to in of those shareware CDs that were so common in mid-to-late 90s.

Anyway, the game is called "Heavy Combat" and it totally matches the description. As one of the previous user said, the registration code can be found by examining the .exe with an hex editor :hihihi:

Thanks, if the person who was looking for this game ever comes back he/she will be able to verify whether this is the game he/she needs, but I doubt there could be something else that is like this.

YES! That's exactly the game I was looking for!

Thank you so much!
