may give this one another try... i always thought the graphics were great in this series but couldn't get past the interface.

The interface has been streamlined from part 2 onward, the first game is still a little clunky, especially combat. The outstanding graphics and that certain "french charm" of the game still make it worthwhile to play though. :)

That game was a favourite from my childhood. Got hold of a copy recently to relive old memories. Really dissapointed. I don't remember it being so jilty and what's up with the gameplay? Seems almost impossible to ever restore your characters to full health after they've had a rumble, they're forever on the brink of death. Unless I'm doing something seriously wrong...

Get a healer, or potions? Not sure if endurance was implemented in part 1 already, but if so you have to rest quite often after fights, else your characters will be very weak.

Dumb and frustrating game. If you want to play a quality 1st person RPG with even better graphics download TES Arena.

It's the only part of the trilogy I never played... somehow I couldn't get myself to it... I think there were some more reasons to that than the fact that your position wasn't marked on the map, but that one was surely a nail to the coffin. I completed the other two Ishars, though, so maybe I'll give it a try... again...

I once tried to play it but movement interface was too confusing...

I'm starting to feel like the personal supporter for this series, but... have you tried the keyboard? The arrow keys for movement, End & PgDown for turning. You can also use the F-keys to attack. It's as easy as it gets.

I've always played Ishar with keyboard and I loved the way they used function keys for attacking and action. I miss this in every other cRPG...

Do you know where I could find Turtle Slobber ? It is one of the parts of the mixture ZARKLUG - for men of the team to make them not to love Deloria.

Sorry, my english is not very well.

I have found that mixture, but I have another problem. What to do after visiting Forbidden House? Team dies slowly after that. How could I heal them? In that house I found Rune Board.

we followed the directions to find the guy with the 5 rings that is given in the walkthrough. We have defeated the white knight and have the helmet. Any help out there?

Hi. This is one of my favorite RPGs series besides Elder Scrolls, Realms of Arknia, and Bloodstone (Magic Candle 3 engine).

IIRC, and am not willing to search the solutions over the net, to bypass losing energy after visiting forbidden house, you will have to drink or cast (?) Brainwash. Not sure about that.

When you achieve Metal Helmet from the White warrior, you can see the invisible lizard-men in the forest south-east across the bridge off the start position. This can be done with detect invisibility spell too..

You can orientate after a while it will be no big problem, whitout map position. Bloody hard game...you have to pay for saving position!

Cheers
Oggy

Go there from Ruoghast. Pass the eastern bridge and go 13 steps south and 7 steps west. You should see a single tree in a meadow. Put on the helmet and kill lizard man - hewill be standing at the tree. Get 5 rings.

I can't get past the language selection at the beginning of the game. It won't me select one of the four language options. I've tried running the program with DOSBox and without, and I'm using Windows XP. Any help?

In reply to the previous post - try pressing numbers on the right side of the keyboard.

Funny thing, when everybody here seems to like this game the least from the series, I only played this one. My first experience was with "cities without houses" - I saw floor, sky, money bags and enemies - no houses, walls, etc. So I had to make a map by walking blindly about and hitting with my head (read: heads of my heroes) to every side. Though this didn't stop me from completing this great game. Hope this version is better.

In return I have my questions. First, what are the Rune Tablets for? Second, how to create potions, the ones from the scroll? Particulary, to transform Morgula, to save oneself from the Forbidden House and to stop people liking Erwan's daughter. And how to heal, except for using Healing spell?

Also, has anyone used the cheats? I know, it's better to play honestly, but I'd like to explore all the game (last time I didn't). I tried to hack it, but nothing happened.

In the end - thank you for this site. Even though there are much better (graphically and soundly) games now, classic games are classic. They will never die!

So there was a way to stop my men loving that woman, I just killed them all and went all female, no wonder I struggled with it when i was a wee one.

That's the easiest way. I have the same sort of a problem - after facing (and killing :) the mental sorcerer tha guards the entrance to Valathar Dungeon, my characters are too concentrated on fighting each other. Brain wash doesn't seem to help. Maybe, it's not the correct potion? Can anyne help? Otherwise I'll have to try all the potions from the list. Or go the easy way - kill my two level 9 fighters, and get some weaker ones.

For everyone that has problems with the walkthrough provided here there's a detailled one that will lead you step for step through the game (including the finding five rings and fighting the mental wizard), you can read it here: Help for Amiga Games (http://home.flash.net/~rayearle/Ifiles/IsharI.html). As the name of the site says it's for Amiga-version of the game which might have some variations, but probably none.

Thanks for the link, man. That's a really better walkthrough. Still, it offers the easy way in dealing with difficulties. It's kinda hard to kill or dismiss your characters with whom you played all the game, just because Brain Wash doesn't help. By the way, tried all potions from the list yesterday (except for LZYXZ, or something, as it required the Turtle Slobber, already used on Deloria). Nothing took away the Inversion. And I should say, it's a heavy blow, that only one character in the game can learn this spell. So, had to kill Kiriela and take Obarmon. No Inversion for me now!

Another problem - Krogh :) I don't seem to hit him. The first time I played the game (ages ago), I killed him. But now I don't have the memory of this at all.
Now I even have the Exhausted Witch with me, but only 4 Rune Tablets. Not even the Magic Sword can hit Krogh. There's something cycrling around him, and he kills me in a minute. I use healing every time, and my physical energy is full, but my warriors simply don't hit Krogh. Any help?

Warm Tear !

My name is Dariusz Maria Krzywicki and I would like to share with you with something wich I was making for last three days . I remember those evenings when was winter outside and I travelled through lands of Kendoria . It was many years ago but I still feel the spirit of Ishar so I decided to enchant that feeling in music ... I managed to download old tracker modules
From Ishar , Ishar 2 and Ishar 3 and remove the dust and make brilant from diamond .
Songs from Ishar and Ishar 3 I transfered to MIDI Files , it was hard because of many bugs
which occured during conversion process , I tried to remove them as well as possible and
apply good quality tones . In Ishar 2 I decided to make leave it in module format but I changed all samples for new ones . After all I mixed it and stored in mp3 format .
I dedicate my work for everyone who feels same spirit of magic , sword , honour and romantism which is included in that wonderful , beyond time game .
Run EMULE and find „ ISHAR RESSURECTION ... . RAR” ( the file contains complete 15 songs form Ishar 1 ,2 , 3 in new edition ... )

Greetings For Silmarilan Gods !

This is quite a complex game for an early DOS classic with all those keyboard commands. I would love to use my mouse with this interface, but unfortunately don't have a mouse driver for DOS... can anyone direct me to a link for this? Would the mouse make combat substantially easier? Also, in the setup screen I distinctly select Soundblaster for my soundcard, but the sound effects always come through my little computer speaker - with no way to adjust volume to my knowledge.... any helpful suggestions? - oh, and the joystick interface don't work either despite their being one connected at the back of the computer... don't tell me it ALSO needs to be a DOS driver!

Mouse drivers for DOS? I'll look around for my old one.

What specific soundcard have you got? Are you sure you set the adress and interrupt correctly in the setup?

As for the joystick... well, never used one myself, but I think you're right about the drivers. Plug&Play came much later.

I don't know if anyone comes here anymore, but I finally won this game tonight. Here are some tips that might help.

- Krogh seems to randomly be invulnerable for a short period of time. Just hit him five or so times and then the magic sword will start to work. Some attempts, he was not invulnerable at all.

- You don't need the rune tablets to win, especially not the one in the forgotten house. It is way too much trouble, and they don't do much of anything. Just use invuln. potions (see below).

- To get the sword in the stone, you have to have a party member with no experience points. I used the princess, but gave it to Aramir.

- The southern (I believe) entrance to Elwing fortress is a perfect place to level and get rich. Just walk in and out the door after each battle. There are agility, intelligence, and wisdom trainers nearby, as well as the best shop in the game and spells.

- 22 points was the max I got my stats. Aramir was at 22 on strength, agility, and 20 at wisdom and intell. Strength is the most expensive, and the only one I could find was way back in the first town. I'd get a couple hundred thousand gold and head back there. Thanks to the ease of loading saves with Dosbox, if you get extremely unlucky with stat gains, just reload and try again.

- The cleric Obarman is not as important as walkthroughs make him out to be. His resurrection spell never even worked for me (not sure if it was a glitch or what). If you lose him or don't want to get him, don't worry about it. I ended up killing him and keeping Aramir with the de-charm potion, and I'm very glad I did.

- Krogh is easy. Save after you kill the last of the three wizards, and then make yourself an invulnerability potion. Give it to Aramir, and go to work. I was dealing out 920 damage a shot. Everyone else died, though, but I won easily. Second time, I realized I had enough materials to make three potions, so I kept Kreylia (sp?) (the priest) and Dorian (the other priest), but neither did anything useful. Make sure you make Aramir's last so it stays around long enough to win. I believe the ingriedients are 1 salamander oil, 1 gargoyle claw, 1 rat brian, and 1 dried mistletoe.

- The dragon didn't deal me any damage, even though it kept popping up on my guys' faces. I think it might have been a glitch, but it's the same everytime. Damage numbers come up, but there is no decrease in hp.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Edit: I forgot to add that if your casters get inverted, don't worry about it. I think everyone but Aramir was inverted when I won it. It doesn't effect spells, and you don't need a backup warrior for Krogh anyway. If your main guy does get afflicted with it, just reload. I saved after every wizard to be safe.

Apparently the best way to kill the last boss is to unequip your weapons of and beat him with your hands. Worked for me, but that was a long time ago....

I bought Ishar 1-3 for next to nothing nearly a decade ago. I bought them because I used to see my friend playing Ishar 3 on his PC years before and I must say, while the games do look reasonably good, the first two games pretty much stink. They're really not easy, they throw you in the deep end, you don't have a map and you can easily get lost because everything feels familiar, etc.
