I like the idea of a screening process before reviews are put up, I would happily be a part of such a progamme. As long as it doesn't turn in shouting at reviewers who don't speak English as a first language because they put an apostrophe in the wrong place (they make the reviews in their spare time and out of the goodness of their hearts, we should show we are grateful to them).

I'm pretty sure my reviews were screened before they were posted, but then again I'm a special case...

I think they are only screened for technical accuracy. My Aleshar review was altered to correct the information I had disclosed about music and sound.

My reviews are reviewed by wendy before they are put up, so no chance of a grammatical error there.You will find some in my older reviews though :whistle:

Believe me, if you're an English major and/or you spend a lot of time proofreading essays for an English professor or tutoring English students, constant grammar problems do make you cringe. Imagine having to proofread a 7 page essay that was meant well, but poorly organized and filled with grammar and punctuation errors. It's not fun.

Addressing everyone else: See, the importance of good grammar and punctuation is not to make life more miserable for you, but rather to make your work more fluid and easier to read for your target audience. One of the three reasons I had joined this site was because I hoped that the reviewing community would learn from example. A good chunk of Abandonians speak English as a second language, and it would be good for them to learn from someone who always knew English and whose discipline is English. I gave up writing reviews here because of the bad attitudes some people gave me during my time here. I had hoped to speak with Kosta about starting a grammar program where reviews are not posted right away, but are first cleared by grammar "coaches" who review the review and give the reviewer tips in private for writing based on any problems that were in the review.

I agree completely with you, that's why I have such an issue with people writing "u" or "r" instead of a simple three letter word. The way you present yourself on the net (in a review or otherwise) is a reflection of how you are in the "real world". If you can't take the time to properly express yourself a lot of people won't take you seriously.

That being said if this team does come through and you have another open slot I'll be more than willing to lend a hand.

Well, it clearly doesn't NEED to be perfect - it's getting along fine as it is now

However, I agree with the topic starter (whoever that was, can't remember now) that the reviews would benefit from the ironing out of little errors - they certainly make the writer's opinions seem less informed to me (which I'm obviously not saying they are...) and the site appear a little less professional, which is unfortunate.

As far as English as a second language is concerned, I've met many people who aren't native speakers who have better spelling, punctuation and grammar skills than the majority of people who grew up with English as their first language.

I'd also be more than happy to screen anyone's reviews for SPG (as the GCSE mark scheme calls it) if they were to PM or email me, or even to post the text on the forums (so long as I happened to read the thread, obviously).

When it come down to grammar I must say this:
Grammar is killing the language itself. People started talking first and invented grammar in order to analize their language later.
Still it's here and it should be used. I'm not using it, because I feel it's more importaint to get the message accros. People should put down their own thoughts as they apeared - meaning - every time you made a pause in your thinking there should be a punctuation. This will lead to grammatically incorect sentances, but will improve on comunication (in general).
But as there's only a handful of people thinking this way I have absolutely nothing against somebody correcting my mistakes - unless that would change the meaning.
Often there's a really slight difference, if you put a coma at a different place. It may be wrong (maybe some other punctuation symbol should be used) but that's where the pause is supposed to be - otherwise it's not my thought. I'm open to suggestions however. If anyone want's to correct any mistake (no matter who made it) give suggestions. Reviews were changed in the past - there's no reason they shouldn't in the future. I think the best example is the Monkey Island review (it changed altogether). There's still a translation of the first review on the slovene site - and just a quick comaprison will let you see the difference (even if you don't speak Slovene).
