Default Geforce4 is driving me crazy

I doubt anyone would know but maybe osme Nvidia fan knows how to solve this.

Ehm so here is the problem... Someone bought a LCD 22" widescreen monitor and this nvidia card (geforce 4 MMX440) doesn't support the propper screen resolutions. the needed resolution would be something equivalent to 1024x786.

Now at first the whole thing was freezing (this is how it all started). Then i decided to upgrade the cards drivers to latest ones. This solved the freezing, but the darn thing is flickering. it switches off the monitor and turns it back on after a sec or two (just enough to make you go crazy). Somehow i found the drivers for this particular ASUS monitor and i installed those. But the screen still does that.

ok so my question is is this actually a graphics card issue or something wrong with the monitor? What is the way to solve this?

I believe i saw something similar long time ago on ATI graphics card, but then i realised that it was treating monitor as a TV screen. once i set it propperly it stopped. however i am not the best in dealing with nvidia cards. still i found these settings in their control panel, but they all seem to be set propperly to VGA and monitor...

also the computer also has a TV card installed. could that be the issue? Strange enough when you play that TV everyhting seems to be working fine...

Maybe the GeForce4 couldn't handle the monitor (since it's old).
Also, I LOLed at your sig.

Yah, well i forgot to mention - i tried that. it only gives me options of 60, 70, 72 and 75. Tried them all, but same thing happens.

well this monitor is definatelly not good with this old card. but still, it's not like any games are being played on that computer. Internet is quite full of posts of people with similar problem (only on new nvidia cards). but no solution. i honestly believe that having a 4:3 ration would be better in this case than having 16:9 especially since (A) it needs to have low resolution (person using it doesn't really see too good) and (B) it is used mainly to read news articles on internet.

It's probably just that this GeForce 4 MX440 doesn't support the 16:9 ratio resolution, being just a slimmed down OEM graphics card, unlike it's bigger brother GeForce 4 Ti4600.
1024x768 btw. is a 4:3 resolution.

well that's what i am saying! i can't set any 16:9 resolution. it doesn't give me the option. well at least not the kind with bigger letters.

that, and it flickers.

I have that graphics card, and I can only tell you don't expect anything from it.

does it do the same thing to you?

Heh i am not expecting much, like i said the computer is used for browsing mostly, occasionally some TV.

Yesterday i checked the motherboard and it seems fine (no bloated capacitors). I also did a direct X tests (dxdiag) and everyhting came out ok. CPU temp is normal, both fans are working on 400W PSU.

there are two thing things that puzzle me. first is why the whole hting was working normal for about a month and then started creating problems and second why the computer when you give the command to shut down instead of shutting down it show the "shutting down" screen and then iut restarts!?!

Sometimes it restarts by itself as soon as desktop loads (so i've heard). i checked it with spybot and it has sophos antivirus installed, so i checked it as well. but nothing seems to be happening. well spybot found some ad cookies...

I don't think those two things are connected to your graphics card, or if they are then there must be some kind of malfunction on them.

For the first, it's probably that your graphics card is beginning to give up it's breath and it's time for a new one. If you say it worked earlier without problems, then it's obvious it's becoming defective.
For the second, it's usually a problem with the power unit (which is responsible for directing the commands to switch off / interrupt and switch on again), which also might be getting old and not working correctly anymore.
