I'm a Linux user, so I'm pretty lost on Windows. Please pardon my ignorance...

Using DosBox 0.63 with D-Fend 2.0.62 front end. Attempting to play Alien Incident downloaded from Abandonia. When run with DosBox, I get:

Code:
Alien Incident v1.40 Copyright (c) 1996 Housemarque Games
DOS version 5.0
Available Base Memory: 519680 bytes
DOH! Note enough Base Memory.
You have to free 30320 more bytes of Base Memory
to run this game.

128 kb freed.
When I run "mem", it reports 637 kB of free conventional memory.

I'm pretty new at this. Any advice?

Thanks!

Very Unusual...
Dosbox usually tricks the program into using normal RAM.

Try Booting up your computer with a Dos bootup floppy and running it.
If that won't work,I don't know what will.

I Have no idea whats wrong,But even if I must install linux and find out myself I'll do my best to help.
(Don't worry,I think linux is cool so I don't mind having to install it if needed)

Anyway,Bootup in dos(Not command prompt,or the linux equivalent)

Tell me what happens then.

try loadfix.
(inside dosbox that is)

on second thought it seems that you are using loadfix....
(with an amount of 128)
disable that.

Unfortunately, all my hard drives are SATA drives, and I have no idea whether (real) DOS has drivers for the mobo SATA drive controller. I suspect not. I've tried to boot that machine into DOS for other unrelated puposes and found I couldn't access the hard drives.

However, the machine is a dual boot, and I can try booting into Linux and using DosBox and see if that gives me any different results. I'll try that right now.

OK. Here's what I got:

Code:
DOS version 5.0
Available Base memory: 652016 bytes
Base Memory OK.

Available expanded memory...... 15296 KB
LIM/EMS Version * * *.............. * *4.0
Total expanded memory pages .... 1024
Available expanded memory pages ... 956
Total handles .... 100
Active handles .... 0

Mouse driver found.
No CD-ROM drives found.

C:\>
So it seems like I got farther in Linux, but I'm still not all the way there. Is there a way of configuring a CD-ROM to be present?

It's funny seeing these terms. Most of my assembly experience was with the 6502 where we didn't have issues like "expanded" and "extended" memory. LOL.

Erm, stupid question, but if you're that much more comfortable working with Linux, why don't you simply try running a Linux version of DOSBox?
