Laptops are getting better for gaming all the time. There are already laptops which have GF6800 as their GPU but these are not meant to be taken with you to work, they weigh 5 kilo's or more. They are easily stored however so you can clear a cluttered desk quickly by simply closing you laptop and verticly storing it on a bookcase. Laptops with the X700 (like Swiss has) are already perfectly suited for playing games, even the newest, albeit not at the absolute highest settings for the most modern games. The new ATI X1600Go that is appearing in laptops from early 2006 is 40% better then the X700 it replaces and therefore comparible to the 6600GT on the desktop market. The release of new mobile graphics cards after their more power hungry brethren on the desktop market is getting shorter every generation. This means the graphics hit you take while migrating from desktop to laptop is getting smaller and you will have use of it for longer.

The biggest advantage laptops have over desktops (besides being able to take your computer with you wherever you go) is power consumption. A modern desktop will consume anything up to 500W of power while a laptop of similar (but not same) configuration will use less then half of that. So if you find your electric bill is soaring out of hand and you know your buring the midnight oil on your new "state-of-the-art" gaming rig a high end laptop might be a good investement.
Of course all that comes at a high initial purchase price. Even a medium laptop cost more then a high end desktop and that laptop is not nearly as easily upgraded once bought (as stated the GPU cannot be upgraded at all most of the time). Still a notebook is much more versatile for people on the go and much more environmentally friendly for those who care.

Please don't say laptops are no good for gaming any more.

Oh no, I don't think that anyone here said that!

As I said earlier, I use a 2002 laptop as my main and gaming PC.
They are fine, just not as good for gaming as desktop PCs for reasons mentioned earlier.

I own a Vaio with 1,6 mhz, 512mb ram and a gfgo6200 graphics card. I nearly play

every game that I like and it really works like a charm. But I must admit that I don´t

really play the newest games. The only two newer games I tested were Doom3 and

Pirates. And how I said: they work like a charm.

I don´t think that I will ever change it against a desktop again...

More reasons why laptops are inferior to PCs as gaming rigs:
-smaller monitors
-smaller, more cluttered keys on the keyboard
-that stupid touch pad instead of a mouse
-battery powered means you can't have an 12 hour gaming session
-much harder (and therefore impractical) to overclcok

Touchpad is fixed by pluggin a USB in.

Power by pluggin an adaptor in.

Easy when you know how. k:

I know that. But that means carrying more crap around with your laptop. I'm talking about the deficiencies of the item itself. Not taking into account workarounds and add-ons.

nickson,
you are right that it has got smaller monitors, stupid keyboard and hard to overclock
but
you can connect mouse through usb
you can connect labtop in to socket and don't have to run on battery

i thin that big disavantage of labtobs are that and if your g.card does not support som kinda-stupid-shading you need to buy a new one and change parts of labtop is "very difficult"

edit:^i write too slow=(
