Add the -freesize x parameter to the mount command for your C drive, where x is the amount of free space (in MB) you want DOSBox to report.

Okay, here's what I did and the subsequent problem.

Using DOSBox 0.71, I:

1. Renamed file to EARTH
2. Put EARTH in file ADrive on C:
3. mount A: C:\ADrive (making the file ADrive my A Drive)
4. A:
5. EARTH
6. INSTALL

This worked fine, opening up the install. However, I chose to install from A Drive to C Drive. When I tried it said "not enough space on destination disk". Unless this game is far larger than I expected, it will fit on my C Drive. Does anyone know why this won't work?
[/b]
That happened because you didn't mount a c drive. You mounted an a drive for the files to be installed from, but you have to also mount c drive for the files to install to. Do that, and you'll be fine.

I have a different problem however. I am also getting the fatal error nomem error message that was discussed earlier. Did anyone find a fix for this?

did you try running on different version of dosbox and changing your "core" in dosbox config?

Locate you C mount. (e.g. "mount c D:\Games\DosDir")

Add -freesize 600 in behind. (so that's "mount c D:\Games\DosDir -freesize 600")
Now DosBox will "think" Your mounted drive has 600MB of free size left. (good enough for Dos)

btw. you can substitute the 600 for any logical amount of free size in MB.

You can get intelligent robots?
What did you have against them?

Okay, I have had problems getting Sim Earth to work using DOSBox. I set up DOSBox 0.65 the way that it is set up via the Abandonia tutorial. I downloaded the game, and extracted the files. I renamed the folder "EARTH" (without quotes) and moved it into the CDrive. I typed :CD EARTH, and then "install". I chose install from Drive A to Drive C, yadda yadda yadda.

When it came time to install, it said "cannot find simearth.dat from drive A" or whatnot. So I looked in the EARTH folder, and lo and behold, simearth.dat was in the folder. I created a folder called ADrive and put that in my C drive (next to the DOS folder that has all the DOSBox info). I copied all the files under "EARTH" and put those into ADrive, then I ran DOSBox, and typed "mount A: C:\ADrive". My A drive is now the ADrive folder.

I reinstalled Sim Earth, same process. And everything worked smoothly. I now have a working version of Sim Earth going on right now as I type this.

I hope this helps anybody using Windows XP with DOSBox that had the same troubles.

To run the game after installation just type "simearth" (without quotes) into the prompt. And if you want to play it after that just type: "CD simearth" -> "simearth" (again, no quotes).
[/b]
worked like a charm. thanks

FATAL ERROR: PROGRAM ABORTED
FALLOC NOMEM 0:_fmalloc(0)[/b]
I am getting this error as well... program installed OK, that error shows up after typing "simearth" (after install).

I've tried changing the memory settings in DOSBox and re-running the install with different options (no sound, fewer colors, etc), but still getting the error. Anyone have any other ideas?
[/b]
Since someone emailed and asked, I did get around this. I think the original download I had was corrupt (I forget where I found it, Underdogs maybe?). I did a fresh download from here, followed the install instructions in this thread, and it's working fine.

Soooo... if you're getting the above error, post where you got it so we know not to trust that one anymore. :)

Game was released in 1990. So you may have played it in Windows, but it might have been Windows 3.0. :)

Although it probably ran ok in Win95, so if you didn't pick it up until a few years later it was probably no big deal.

It was re-released as a win 3.1 game.
