Sorry to pour cold water in you veins, but that game is so bug ridden it practically killed my interest in it. There seems to be a memory leak somewhere (I read this) and as a result, the game will run slower and slower until you have no other option than to quit, reboot and restart. Also, the game is extremly unstable under most hardware configurations and you will probably see the crash frequency rise upwards like Apollo 13 as the game progresses. Not to mention the countles number of glitches (smash a skeleton, run off with his thigh bone, and you'll see "skeleton rebuilding routine" going haywire).

Also: Many Ultima fans hated it so much for the breach of Ultima traditions, that that was a major factor why no X was ever released.

BUT: It is a beautiful game, graphics wise. Just don't expect much of an RPG here. It's a strict linear adventure game.

In My Oh So Extremly Humble Opinion

WARNING: The following might ruin it for you, but there are some awesome screenshots here.
Just to prove some facts about glitches and how "serious" Ultima fans took that game http://www.it-he.org/ultima9.htm

Oh yes, the black sheep in the saga. Too bad they didnt get the full ten.

Many people said that the storyline sucked and the original script was better....has anyone else read the original script?

Well, the game wasn't exactly that bad, but I had high hopes for that game. Plus, as mentioned, it had lots of bugs, and lots of plot holes.

I have, some of it anyway. Don't remember much of it though.

Oh, you might want to back up your savegames at a regular basis as there is a savegame-killer bug there.

I've read a few things about this game, but haven't been able to play it yet. It seems that some people ahve more fun with the bugs thand with the game itself.

There're is also a fan-made patch for the game that should fix many issues in the last official patch for the game, though I was quite content with the official patch. There are some bugs, of course, and some plot-holes too, but after Ultima 8 that's nothing new, anyway. There was also no danger for the savegames in the game with the last official patch when I played this game through.
Though it wasn't that bad, to be honest, I won't replay this game again. It lacks too many things, one of them the lacking "virtual life" of the NPC's or monsters. Compared to Gothic 1 or 2 (the idea for which came from Ultima 9, btw.), this game is empty, rather boring and you simply can't dispose of a feeling of being alone in this game's world.

Battles with monsters also could be much better. One only needs to think of a regular rogue, who, after spotting you, spreads his arms in a most ridiculous way while approaching you. It could have been done better, without doubt. Too bad the game was ruined that way because of Electronic Arts, before it came out there were many interesting promises that never found into the game after it came out.

Really the game have bugs but have diversion too. A decent story and lots of Kms. to explore.

In my opinion fans can enjoy with it.

I believe that original, Ultima 9 was planned using the same engine as Ultima 8.
I remember seeing a screenshot on a Fansite, some time ago, wich they got from a developper at Origin at the time.

Too bad, this version got canned, and they made this 3D version....

L8r!

AFAIK they never thought about making an X. Ultima has always been planned as three trilogies (age of darkness, age of enlightenment and age of armageddon) and the series was finalized with number 9 (IX) as it should have been.
