Default Dosbox?

I've heard a little bit about this program, but I'm not sure what it does. I didn't really know where to post this topic so I posted it here, sorry. Anyway, what exactly is Dosbox? Sorry to sound stupid, but I just don't understand what it does. From what I understand it emulates DOS?

Actually it emulates an entire PC (x86). What it is perticulary good at is playing old games (DOS not windows). The program runs from windows and from the DOS promt it creates you can run your old DOS games that do not run from XP or don't run properly. Not all games will run in DOSBox, it is an ongoing project with new versions comming out every six months or so.
You will need a fairly good computer to be able to emulate at decent speeds. A 600Mhz computer will emulate a 286 to a low end 386 computer nicely. 1800Mhz is what you need for a high end 486 emulation to a low end Pentium.

Data knows more about this then I do.

Also DosBox emulates sound too, like old Soundblaster standards on new soundcards.
Under Windows XP old Dos-games cannot play the sounds or music based on this standard, just the General Midi-music, like Roland Rap-10.

As far as I know, a decent graphical front-end for DosBox can be found on the link below.

http://www.d-fend.tk

I don't know much about Dosbox, but without the front-end it's still quite easy to use. But anyway.

DOSBox was designed specifically for computers running the Win2000/XP OS. It will purr like a kitten under XP.

You have to tell him

mount c d:\

c:

and from now on the directory in which your games are...
e.g. if your game is in the directory d:\Game type

cd game

and then the executable of the game.
e.g. the game is Prince of Persia

Prince

When the game starts, you can set the emulation speed by pressing Ctrl+F12 (faster CPU) or Ctrl+F11 (slower).

You can also increase/decrease the Frame skip with Ctrl+F8 (increase) and Ctrl+F7 (decrease).

With Ctrl+F5 you can take screenshots from the game you're playing.

If you still have doubts, just ask Data - he's the official DosBox Master of Abandonia.

Hope it was of some utility
