DOS 4.0 with a custom menu system that a friend of my dad brewed up to give a simple menu interface type OS on top of Dos.

hm, long time ago, I also made some type of boot-screen menue's in DOS. Edited the autoexec.bat and config.sys a little. So I was able to choose between different settings in the beginning mostly regarding RAM and drive optimization/FILES and such stuff.

But now I have no clue anymore how I did all of this these times. Long time ago.

Thought I'd find an old boot-disc with this menu thingy on it but nada :/

In any DOS installation, type "help", then look for "multi-config", there you have the instructions:

... And then read about the commands: "menuitem", etc.

You can also look for batch sctipting commands, etc. Enjoy.

The pictures above are from the help program included in DOS 6.22, not sure about previous versions, both regarding the help program, and the very possibility to set up multiple configurations.

Multiple configurations are only useful if some applications need a lot of conventional memory, while others need additional resident programs that use it up, or if some need an expanded memory manager while others are incompatible, etc.

The real first OS I used was Ms-Dos 5.0 with Dosshell. Then followed Dos 6.22 + Win 3.11 for Works, Windows 95, short trip to Unix 4.4BSDLite, then 98SE and Windows XP. Now using Windows XP and eComStation, first mostly for games.

Kaypro1 with cp/m and a green screen.

Then win3.0 on an XT pc,which they said couldn't be done.
I used a program that simulated extended memory using the hardrive.

Depends on the platform The very first was AmigaOS (Workbench 1.3) on the Amiga 500. Then I had a PC with MS-DOS 5.0 (Norton Commander installed on top of that). Later it was Windows 3.11 with newer versions of DOS (up to 6.22). Then Windows 95->98->ME->2000->98->XP->Vista->7 (64bit)

I'm not counting my various forays into Linux.
