So I am a big adventure game freak, and I love all of those styles like Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones, etc. I love the collection we have on this site as well, and I noticed that as well as abandonware, we also have a collection of freeware games, the most wel known probably 5 Days a Stranger and 7 Days a Skeptic. Anyway, so I was wondering if this game should be put on the site. It's called Night of the Hermit, based off of Monkey Island's Herman Toothrot. I really liked it, I thought it was entertaining and quite fun. Link here http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?name...t+of+the+Hermit

Is this a yes or no?

Hmm... ripped sprites... that's usually a big no for me to even play the game.

Well, as a game developer myself, I'd say that since the creator has ripped sprites from another computer game, he shows lack of effort in his game. Also, maybe they haven't put enough effort in elsewhere. I, and a lot of other people, like my adventures original and fun. If there's no effort, there's not a lot of fun.

Despite the ripped sprites that is indeed a good adventure game, it's kinda hard, but it's the best Lucas Arts fan-based game you can find out there (At least those that I've played)

From those I've seen, Apprentice I and II, Rise of the Hidden Sun and Digital Spell, just to name a few, look way better, and actually look like real games, not like an eclectic brew. Claiming Night of the Hermit as one of the best LucasArts fanmade games's an insult to these fine works of art.

I've played all of those, the point in this game is that it's a perfect fan based game, he got the humor right, the look right, the feel right, everything screams Monkey Island, I was merely judging it by how faithful it was being to the original formula, nothing on the overall quality it stacks up against other games, besides, if we judged games that way, all freeware would be considered smoldering trash.

Case in point, add it, it's fun, and it's all good.

As a sort-of amateur games maker myself (Only one finished work, and it's total rubbish, but I have many barely-started, much better, projects), may I offer up the possibility that it's not so much lack of effort as lack of talent?

I love making games, but I can't sprite worth a damn. Using rips serves both to make a fangame seem more authentic, and allows those of us with the artistic ability of a blind chimp to still create games.

Heck, it even mentions that possibility in the HOTU review!

I think "Night of the Hermit" was the herald of "Hay let's just make endless Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle fangames/tributes with no original ideas!"

Hence it annoys me.

Personally, just because the graphics are not original or inventive in a game, as long as the game is entertaining to play, I really enjoy them. I don't dislike something based on the "principle of the thing," because I am a horrible artist, but I've created graphics and games before using ripped sprites because I really don't feel like having a bunch of circle people with heads that look like this:
