Often adventures with lots of Full Motion Videos comes on some cds or even dvd (Phantasmagoria , Riven etc.) ,but i can't remember such adventure (then you're playing as apilot) . Maybe it's Wing Commander 3 or 4 ?

It is a mix of flight sim and arcade action game with much heavier arcade action than sim. You do get a variety of missions though. Meaning this is no after burner clone...
It is based on a real war, thus no space sims I am afraid.

You get to see your craft from the outside. The game is full 3D of course.
