Hello all,

Eveytime i try to play this game i receive the same error message: File not open: D:Monshou.dat.

It's kinda normal since my OS is in C:. I tried to change the map drive of my second partition to D: and i copied the files there but it still does not work.

I tried with Dosbox (nothing happens at all), directly with Windows XP (Monshou.dat error message) and with VDMS (Monshou.dat error message again).

Have i done anything wrong?

Please helped me!

I played this game a lot when i was younger with a great friend of mine many years ago. That would bring me back some great souvenir!

Wow. Didn't know this was a comp game. I played the hell outta this game on SNES and still do. If only Koei's other games *cough* Genghis Khan, Romance of the 3 Kingdoms, etc. *cough* were this straightforward and easy to understand. If people are looking for a manual, I know the commands well enough I could type a reference card or something. Just get me back : E-mail Removed

And man am I glad I found this site today.

I'm adding a bump to this. Just DL'd it and it tells me the same thing. I even went to far as to burn a CD and put it into the drive in question and the Monshou.dat error MOVED to my next cd drive down the list. (I've got 4 cd drives on this thing and I'm low on burnable disks so I can't afford to keep burning extra disks to corner the damned thing into reading SOMEWHERE.) If you find a fix, please post it!

Fun game... but once you find all the holes in the AI (kingdoms surrender easily, battle stupidity) any challenge falls away. After that, though, I had a lot of fun seeing how fast I could conquer it (under 20 terns, with any character.)... Graphics are cute, especially on the SNES version... colorful and fun.

If you're looking for a better challenge try the Genghis Khan or Romance series... or for something in the same sort of setting try Celtic Tales.

I'm having the same problem. If anyone ever checks the forum on a game this old, can they post some advice?

Same problem here, as well. When I copied the game files to the drive where it was looking for them, the game just crashes if I try to start it directly or with VDMSound, and locks up in Dosbox.

hi guys,
i played gemfire a lot when i was a kid. today i managed to deal with monshou.dat problem when running gemfire in order to remind myself how much fun that game was.
in order to run the game under xp you have to:
1) install dosbox
2) EDIT dosbox.conf (available in start menu of dosbox) and change:
fulldouble=false -----> fulldouble=true
output=surface -----> output=ddraw
hwscale=1.00 -----> hwscale=1.50 (only if you have monitor resolution of 1024x768 or better. For 1600x1200 or better, change 1.50 to 2.00)
save the edited file.
3) open dosbox
4) mount the game (example: mount d d:\games\oldies\gemfire)
5) go to drive d: under dosbox (newly mounted gemfire directory)
6) run KOEI.exe (not open.exe, not main.exe, not anything else, but KOEI.exe)
7) koei.exe appears to run only the intro (you can enjoy watching it) but if you press some buttons just after KOEI sign appears you will get yourself up to the menu of the game.
8) i can even hear the music playing
9) ENJOY!!!
