For the virtual PCs, you will need a copy of the OS you want on VPC. Mount the CD crive in VPC and install the OS the way you usually do.

I dont download the patch from gamepoint couse i dont have an acount and i hate going throw the boring proces of making an acount just for one download and afther that to find out that nothing changed, i rather ask first if the version that shows up in the main menu is right.

Patches can make a lot of difference. Updating Mechwarrior 3 to latest ver got it running in XP for me whereas before the game either crashed outright or ended up with a lot of glitches.

Reading the manual is recommended.

You can write it to an ISO image and make VPC read that image as if it was a disc in it's CD-ROM drive.
IIRC, you could also set up a network between the real and virtual system... but don't ask me how it's supposed to be done.

Steps to share a folder between host-guest in VPC: (short version, read the manual for more)

Safety first: create a folder to share(mine is 'VPC_Shared) and allow sharing, don't share a whole drive.

-> Run your guest OS in VPC
-> VPC menu (above) 'ACTION' -> install or update additions
-> Will mount an ISO (if Win guest), if doesn't start in autorun run it manually
-> *( for dosguest: will mount a floppy image, Dos Virtual Machine Additions.vfd, run dosadd.bat from A:\ )*
-> Will need a VPC reboot (W98)
-> VPC menu -> EDIT -> settings -> shared folders -> share folder -> point to 'VPC_Shared' -> eventually check box 'share everytime' -> apply
DONE.

From now on you can share all the folders/files in VPC_Shared between host-guest.

Default Permanent Fix

The answer comes late (3 years). But I just digged up this game out of my archive and confronted the same problem: CTD in crows nest view.

You dont need a virtual machine for this to work. The problem is most probably cause because you have a multi core CPU and XP loves to switch the CPU assignment of an application while its running, efficiently messing up many old games like Deus Ex (ironically another EIDOS product) and Cutthroats.

The solution is to permanently set the CPU affinity of an application. For this you will need a small application like "IMGCFG" (google it), that will allow you to assign a CPU to the application.

Everything is documented in the readme file, but I'll give you an example of the command line you will need to type in a DOSbox or RUN:

imagecfg -a 0x2 "c:\games\cutthroats\cutthroats.exe"
