Default System Shock 2 surprise

Well Kotaku might be a cesspool most of the time, but this brightened my day:

Dark Engine tweak for modern OS

From a brief look.. 32bit, high rez support, bug fixes. Grab it and dust off your System Shock 2 copies.. now!

Please, excuse me dear hunvagy for my Q.
I know nothing about this game but plan to play in the future.
DOSBox 0.74 solves the problem or not?

SS2 is native windows, so no. It was made during the end of the win95/98 era (1999ish) and it is a fickle beast with modern OSes. Hence the happy realization of someone actually caring about it to warrant a patch. The one you meant is probably System Shock 1.

Do you know if it does anything with the encoding? Because I had managed to play SS2 in 1920x1080 in Vista x64 all right, except the speech and cutscenes wouldn't play. And I've followed the FAQs and the cutscenes play in Windows Media Player just fine... >_< I'd blame the resolution, but what about the in-game speech...?

I'll take a look at this...

Yup, is in the release notes, they switched the video encoding, that pesky Looking Glass Indeo codec is gone for good.

Should be, haven't had time to try it myself, besides I switched to Win7 2 years ago. Because it's so much better As I stated somewhere else before, XP gave me the chills, and Win7 ran Deathtrap Dungeon WITH SOUND out of the box. Anyway, just grab the package and read the release notes, it has every info you need.
