Ah yes that's also in my to-play list, I will promote it in the queue, thanks for the suggestion.

I hear the sequel (Deus Ex 2) is quite worse?

And Thief is completely open-ended, or does it have any kind of main quest?

Oh, really?! I didn't knew that! Thank you for the info!

It's quite good as it is, but comparing to DX2 it's much worse, yes. DX3 looks almost like modern remake of DX1 though.

Just as Deus Ex, it's "plot-driven" missions: on each level you have main objective that you must fulfill to progress further.

But just as Deus Ex, inside of (quite big!) level you are mostly free to do what you want.

Think System Shock 2 was made by different people than Deus Ex.

@Japo: I still think that upgraded grenade launcher will prove to be more fun.

Anyway ammunition sure is very scarce in the beginning and middle of the game, considering that it doesn't respawn like enemies do.

Yes I've heard many times that Bioshock was the "spiritual successor" to SS2, and I have to try it someday. But I think it's even more of a shooter and less of an RPG? And strange as it may sound, I usually don't like magic in RPGs, and I like it even less when they include magic-like features in sci-fi RPGs, such as psi in SS2 (but that was only one of the alternatives you could choose or not), and I hear Bioshock has a similar thing with mutations or plasmoids or something?
Of course, i will follow Your kind and always competent advices Dear Japo.
Yoga never forget any non started game(s).
Please, be assured that after Wizardry 7 pass i will try again my attempts to run SS2.

Never said Never.

Just don't bother trying again with the original release, it's very hard to make it run right. I almost managed but without audio speech (which is a showstopper for this game) or cutscenes, even after fixing the codec and even though I could open the files from outside the game...

Get the GOG.com release--although you still may have to install a Microsoft redistributable:

Note to self: Don't play this game in a fully dark room for too long...

Especially don't play it at late evenings / during the night in a fully dark room for too long
That's what gave me morbid feelings about the first Thief, during the first playthrough, many years ago - it really creeped me out after a while. Until I replayed it a year later. System Shock 2 even has fitting music to support the atmosphere.

Yeah, Thief also has it's own tense atmosphere, mostly because if you're caught, you're pretty much screwed.
