Default Virtual PC sound

Hello

I found this microsofts program called Virtual PC (for those who dont know what it is; in short it is a program wich allow running of multiple windows OS without the need to dual boot)

i installed virtual PC with windows 98 so i was able to install screamer 2 and mechwarrior 2.
Both games work fine with one exepction: these 2 games use music directly from CD wich is an mixed mode cd (1part DATA, 1part AUDI CD), but I cannot hear any music, i've also tried normal AUDIO CD whitout sucess.
Now the question is: Is there any way i could make AUDIO CDs work under virtual PC?

Did you install the VM additions in VPC/W98?
Do you run the game from a real (original) CD or an image?

And your OS is....?
And VPC 2004 or 2007?

Need to know, you must to do additional work if you're under Vista.

There is kinda a bug with Vista-VPC2007-W98

To get full CD audio support you must (after installing the VM additions in W98) open the W98 device manager and command an update of the SB16 sound device driver.
When asked state you have a disk and point towards C:\Program Files\Virtual Machine Additions that are copied on your VPC-W98 C:\ (but not installed correctly) by VPC2007.

That should sort things out.

whene i tried to update driver from this location i couldn't C:\Program Files\Virtual Machine Additions.
There are just 2 files in that folder and none is a driver file
this 2 files are located there:
- cdeject9x
- vmsrvc

i've tried reinstaling VM additions couple of times

Strange, you should have more files in there, the update is done with an 'inf' file ..... another Vista mystery.

You always could try to use your W98 CD to update the SB16 driver, the needed SB16/AWE drivers are on it and there isn't that much difference with the VM additions driver ....

BTW, is your VPC2007 'service pack' updated to SP1?

yeah VPC updatet to SP1

maybe i have forgot to point out that all other sounds work fine, heck i can even play mp3 CDs, only problema i have is with audio CD (it shows correct nubmer of tracks and correct lenght of a song but whene you start to play them you cant hear anything...)

(PS: i also remember that in "old" days you had to connect cd-rom with soundcard directly with a cable if this is the case that i cant play audi CD is there any program emulator etc. that would do the trick)

Yes indeed, but that's taken care of by VPC, VPC access the CDs via the host OS, so no need for that cable anymore.

However, isn't there a setting in W98 to choose between 'digital' or 'analog' playback of CDs in the CDdrive device manager? Could be a problem if it's set analog, dunno, maybe?
'Analog' was via that CD audio cable in the ol'times.

I can't check myself in the days that come, not on one of my own PCs .....
But you always could take a look, can't harm.

Also: if I'm not wrong both the games you mentioned have a dos variant, should be on the CD and playable in dosbox 0.73, would solve your problems.
Again: not at home, so it's from memory .....
And yes, dosbox 0.73 works flawless on Vista64. (If you didn't knew that.....)
