I don't want shiny start bars or alt-tabbing or seethrough screens - I just want something that runs my programs. Admittedly Vista has a few decent features, such as bulk renaming of files while keeping extensions - but I'm really rather sure other OSes have had that ability for a while anyway?

As for stability, my XP PC and my Vista Laptop crash with about the same frequency. And the PC tends to be on for much longer periods!

The tl;dr version? Vista's XP with a few flashy bits added on the top, and as long as I turn off most of the flashy bits, I don't mind it.

Vista's advantages aren't that obvious due to XP already being so good.

I mostly come across improvements without really consciously realising them. Explorer (not IE) has improved a great great deal. Take renaming files - you no longer run the risk of replacing the file's extension. You can now also give folders unique icons. Well, there's just too many things to mention - a lot are small improvements but when you stack them all up, and then you go back to XP, then XP feels primitive. It's the best kind of proof that Vista is a very solid OS when you miss it.

The one thing that bothers me about Vista is the rearranging of menus in Office applications. It makes me look like a noob in front of colleagues when I'm trying to show them how to find the Mail Merge option and ... I can't find it. :embarassed:

What does it signify if the only thing I miss is that file renaming thing - and only because I do a lot of bulk file renames but need to keep the extensions?

Most of the new things in Vista annoy me because they mess up what was working well enough in XP already - hence why I remove them and turn it into a slightly newer XP for all intents and purposes.

Not that I'm a Vista basher specifically - it's probably more that I'd just go back to Win98 if I could because that's what I learnt to use a PC with

Erm no. In XP you still rename the entire name if you don't hide file extensions. In Vista it only selects the name if you rename it - you can manually select the extension as well if you want, but you don't have to.

No offense but it sounds more like the typical "I'm used to it this way and I refuse to learn a new way" attitude that too many people are having. Eight years ago, I would also set Windows XP to Windows 98 (the Start menu, colour scheme, etc.) but I then decided I'd try to simply get the best set-up and with Vista it really pays off. It's not that Vista is worse, it's simply that it's different.

Microsoft are in a catch 22. If they improve Vista, people complain because it's different. If they don't change things, people complain saying it's barely different.

But you can't see the extension to rename it! Why do you think I don't hide the extension?

... I'm afraid you lost me. In Vista, if you rename a file WITH the extension visible, it will only select the name itself, not the extension. In the huge amount of renames, I only want to rename the name itself so this is a good thing. In XP, it selected the WHOLE name which was annoying since it meant I had to manually select the name itself without the extension.

I made the jump from Windows xp 64 to Windows 7 64bit RC1. I am using a Dell M90 with 4 gigs of ram; so far I am extremely pleased. My computer is more stable, and I am really digging the enhanced ui interface. I especially dig the new toolbar functionality. I have played a few games, from GOG, and I have not encountered any issues. My productivity applications run as expected.

My two gripes:

For whatever reason, when my laptop is undocked and comes out of standby mode, I receive poor performance. I did not find any clues in the power management profiles, so i am still investigating. I also encountered this issue with my Windows XP installation.

There seems to be a bug when attempting to disconnect USB memory devices, this is widely reported and will most likely be fixed in time for release.

I never had vista or worked with it. but i know from various threads in various forums that Vista had a bigg issue with older programes written either for Win98 or XP (such as for example games). It also had issues with new programes like some antivirus and firewalls.

as for explorer... heh, haven't used that one in a while...

Still the minute i heard that WIn7 will have a backwards compatibility mode i knew the system will likely be more successful than Vista.
