Old games had one great feature - when you were playing them, you felt great. In that times all was in new - remember, when you first saw Doom, then Fallout. And earlier.
I mean, today we get usual to games, so we don't feel surprised, when we see a new game. And I think we never will taste that feelings again. It's a bit sad. Even replaying games won't help (BTW, that even true to any games).

On feelings and emotions: I have now tested Oblivion and compared to the elder ones, especially Daggerfall, I must say it brings out emotions and feelings in me: I feel like I could, should and would smash up my PC even if I can't afford it.

I totally agree that "a supprise works best the first time", and the first 3D game released made more of an impact at that time than any other 3D game can do now, not necessarily in terms of graphics and whatnots, but only by the fact that you saw for the first time a game that offered you a chance to move around in a 3D world. That was awesome and offered a new way of "living in the game".

You know what is said if things start to repeat themselves and the feeling of frishness is long but a memory?
"It's time to move to new horizons".

Everything has it's time of glory, and I guess video games had their time (and long time it was, too). Now their time is running up and something completely new is badly needed that would replace them.

And new things do appear. Look at the Nintendo Wii. They chose not to focus on graphics, since everyone and their brother is taking that path, but instead put their attention to gameplay. There are some awefully cool games allready available for that platform and still more to come. Another great example is all those crazy games Sony made, like 'Dance dance revolution' and that guitar thingy. Those try to bring a new style of games. And they work. Also, it's bound to crossover to the PC platform in a similar fashion. A little patience is required perhaps, but it'll happen. In the meantime, we can just play all of these terrific oldies

That is a point: The new controllers. It comes down to yet another way of "living in the game". You won't see me doing aerobics in front of my monitor, but hey, we all got our preferences.

You can always look for new things in other aspects of life.

True, but the same thing will happen here too.

As for me, when I first introduced myself to AD&D it was great: I spent hours in Internet on WOTK site downloading pictures, booklets and other stuff. But after a while all became usual. That's most sad - people are adaptive, but sometimes it's not good.

Maybe it's about possibilities too. When you grow tired of something, move onto something new. Maybe that "new" isn't computer games, but then again computer games are about entertainment in your spare time. Computer games is all about entertainment, but entertainment is not all about computer games. Look around and see if there isn't anything else that can occupy you for those hours. I'm not saying I always practice what I preach here, mind you :P, but there are other ways of spending those hours so at the end of the day, you really couldn't care less about "the glorious days of old".

I remember when I bought my first computer, second hand, from the owner. He was telling me excitedly that he had two fab games installed: Kyrandia and an Indiana Jones Atlantis game, but I had no idea what computer games were like so I didn't pay much attention. After a few days, out of curiousity, I tried Kyrandia and was hooked. The game play and the chance to save someone/s from the bad guy and set on an amazingly beautiful island with fantasy characters and falling leaves that turned into jewels had me entranced. I'd go to bed and dream about the game, only it was called Rapture. I called up the man and asked if there were any more games like that but he couldn't really suggest any only said I should also try Zork Nemesis. Then I was hooked all over again.

I've bought some of the latest adventure games but they're so banal and pointless, the characters are just walking pixels wandering around a fantastic looking background. I'd love to discover a new game that gave as much joy as the first two. In adventure games it's all about the story and the characters. If these are weak, then everything becomes meaningless.

I agree with you Midget about finding new interests. That's healthy, isn't it? I'm more into art and design right now.
