Well, when those people are just 13 - the parents are responsible.

I think someone messed up in translation along the way. No way did this kid die over Warcraft I. He must have been playing WoW. It just doesnt make sense the other way.
My only plead to developers: lower the grind of future MMORPGs. My only experience is lineage II, but my god was that awful; that game single-handedly turned me away from the genre. It wasnt so much the game that was bad, the community was TERRIBLE...
sorry, im ranting
Did they do a good job w/ the grind in Guild Wars/Other games?

I find that quite scary in-and-of itself. WoW is a video game just as the original Warcraft is a video game. For anyone to die over either should be equally incomprehensible. They're *dirty word* video games. While I'm not trying to single you out specifically, McGroin, I'd think you should find it rather unsettling that you can understand someone dying over one game yet not another.

Yes, MMORPGs have psychological effects. Sure, we don't yet know exactly what those effects are. Regardless, we aren't talking about chemically induced behavioral modification, we're talking about a self-control issue. For someone to die over a video game is no different than someone dying over a sporting event or a verbal disagreement: in all cases it's senseless.

No it wasn't WoW, read the article a bit clearer...

Zhang Xiaoyi died on Dec. 27, 2004, leaving behind a suicide note saying he wanted "to join the heroes of the game he worshipped," the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Now when was WoW released?

June 6, 2005 (in China, according to wikipedia), so it can't be WoW...

...one of the popular "Warcraft" online games...
What makes you guys think this is the first warcraft? is that an online popular warcraft game? or is that WoW? maybe they didnt' mention it so they wouldn't make a commercial for it. i've seen many articles where "most famous hotels", "famous car brand" etc. are mentioned just so they don't make any publicity for the company. maybe they are not allowed to use the name...

the 2004 could be a typo.

Is it just me, or is this thread getting lost in absurdities? It doesn't matter which game it was. The point is that someone flipped his lid and whacked himself. I don't care if it is for reading too much Donald Duck or playing too much on his computer. Yes, it is a mindbogglingly stupid thing to do, but the name of that computer game doesn't enter into it as far as I'm concerned.

Just needed to get it off my chest.

You know, I don't know how to respond to this other than I hate to come off so cold. Unforunately, MMORPGS just have this stigma of being radically life-changing, or life-threatening(Rare). My comment was meant for just connecting the dots, not actually trying to understand and rationalize that connection.

Sure, I remember the story about the Korean guy.* I meant that the lawsuit sounded like something that would happen here.* The marathon gaming session would too, but suing the company for your own bad judgment is very American, and as an American, it makes me sick.
[/b][/quote]
Oh you meant from a frivolous lawsuit standpoint. Yeah the US still has the edge in that department I would say.

But Asia is gaining ground it seems

This is a silly ditty which in my view says it all about lawsuits.

Did the other kids laugh
at your 5 year old Emmy Lou?
Sue them for all they've got
Sue! Sue! Sue!

Did your boss forget
your promotion's overdue?
Sue him for all he's got
Sue! Sue! Sue!

We'll have a blast with judge and jury
Someone has to pay for these
in-
ju-
ries!

So come to court and don't oppose
Or else we have you paying
through
your
nose!
HEY!

Did you know the illusionist
actually hides the truth?
Sue him for all he's got
Sue! Sue! Sue!

When was the last time Santa
brought you anything of use?
Sue him for all he's got
Sue! Sue! Sue!

There's really noone you can trust
They'll cheat you flat but
if
you
must

We lawyers are a loyal bunch
to anyone who can afford to
buy
us
lunch!
HEY!

(Stop that song immediately, or we'll sue)
