So, did I understand this correctly? I have Half-Life one (well, had, I've uninstalled it, but the CD's right here) and it's the one that installs with Steam....I've always wanted to play Counter-strike, but chose Half-Life over it when i was at the store.....your saying if I own half-life, I can download Counter-Strike from Steam for free?
Yes, you can download Counter-Strike for free.
Just put in your Half-Life CD-key (there's a register your product button) once you've gotten Steam.

A list of "First Party" mods and games will appear, they also have links to third party mods.
You do have to first download the mods of course, but they're there all the same for download.
This applies to mods only (the expansions are basicly just mods).
Stand-alone games, such as Counter-Strike source (you don't need HL2 to play it over Steam) have to be bought online, (CS Source comes with HL2 though, so don't worry about that if you want to play Source) but stuff like Day Of Defeat Source are going to cost you.
I think, they haven't released any major details.

A side note Ska, if you do put in your CD key, with HL already installed, Steam will install it over again, because it needs to convert to files over to the Steam Cache format.

It's somewhat annoying, but thankfully Steam has a very fast connection, a 2 gig file for Half-Life 2 finished in about 20 minutes for me (depends on your connection, Broadband has you set).

The original CounterStrike can be downloaded for free as a modification for HalfLife1.

So Mr SteamExpert... sod off because you haven't a clue. :bleh:

Wait, I'm confused, is this CS as in CS, or CS as in 1.6?
And you hurt my feelings!

Well, got a strange failur message in HalfLife. It doesn´t happen every time I play. But

today I made a huge process and paused the game for an hour or two. I therefore

exited HL. After I restarted the game it sometimes hangs up if picking up suit energy

e.g. (error message: fatal error - SV_startsound volume = 369).

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I altered the sound options in the menu?

how old was the halflife game you initially installed? Maybe steam was auto updating it for you. Also the steam engine updates itself automatically.

That's a bug they're trying to work out in Steam Don.
Ignore any errors related to sound or missing files.

It works afterwards, but it's a problem related to a bug that skips over files and then labels them missing.

ah so CS is free for download now that I've bought and registered HL like a fair, obedient civilian? Goody (although I'm probably enjoying the They Hunger mod too much right now to pay any real attention to it)

CS was a free download mod for HL1, but was also released as a standalone and as CS:CZ. CS:Source comes with the silver and gold versions of HL2 (/me regrets not buying the Silver version having bought CS and DoD separately) or standalone via Steam, same goes for DoD:S.

Oh, I see, you are talking as in CS the MOD, not CS the Game, as in 1.6.
