just reminds me of "bitboys" or the phantom console.
talk is cheap! why did they "keep quiet about it" for so long, then hype it before its ready? im not convinced this boat is gonna float LOL: It’s going to be tough – the good news is that they have a business plan which has withstood the scrutiny of high-end Venture capital." - venture capitalist are stupid, they gave truckloads of money to the phantom console scammers for one example. i believe ken silverman is working on a voxel type of engine that will have breakable walls etc |

well at least they've got a sense of humor:
"Coming up with the specifications wasn't too hard - we just had grab some beer and re-watch a couple of the star trek shows" I remember at his last interview BG predicted that we'll practcly reach the limit of processing power in the next decade. So Utilizing a second processor might be a good Idea anyways. And it's a lot easier to explain to the consumers why they need one, if it has a specific function. As for the venture capitalist remark: the 90s are over! capitalists learn from experience and are much smarter now. |

I've read about this PhysX thing a couple of weeks back in C't and thougth it was a great idea. After reading this article I've got to adjust my opinion. It's a suberb idea. But, it has to be embraced by game and applications developers as well as leading chips and mobo-manufactureres, so there's a lot of uncertaintly orbiting their PPU... I can see a lot of use for simulation purposes (flow simulations, construction simulations etc.), which is a segments that also has a lot of potential, so they're not going to be focussed purely on the gaming side...

That is true and is exacltly what is being done allready, but with a dedicated PPU, you can limit the load on your regular CPU. Also if the thing is optimised for the type of calc that is needed in certain alogrithms, a much better performance can be achieved. Your 'regular' CPU has to be allround, a PPU can be very specialist!
Btw. nice links! PS. What they're doing in the second article is a proof that a PPU could lead to performance boost. They've given some of the calculating work to the GPU, thus giving the CPU more power! |

Too bad though PPU would mean more cost for us, ofcourse if it would be applied for gaming...
Maybe it will only be applied in PCs that are used for specialized business that needs a huge amount of physics calculation, something like the proffesional 3D cards are used today, for creating more complex 3D models that a game wouldn't need...
