My 486 DX4/100 lasted until 2004 too. Until the very day I was reassembling it after a failed hardware upgrade and plugged in the AT power connectors wrong. Ouch.
...and thus you came to Abandonia.

Actually that was a few weeks after I registered on AB - and months after I originally found it.

I can assure you that the hardware in it was pretty old.

"Why do you still use ancient computers? With all these emulators out there, it's quite easy to disclaim on the real hardware."

I get to hear that quite often. I don't know how to explain that, but there's nothing better than the blue flickering screen and the good old

What are your arguments then?

Using programs like VM is a good alternative when its near impossible to get your hands on an old machine

The debate of "emulators versus old hardware" can be compared to "MP3 of an old record versus the gramphone disc on a turntable".

- emulation is rarely 100% accurate
- yet having everything in physical format is for serious collectors only, as it's more expensive, requires more storage space, proper handling etc.
- however it allows for celebrating the real old items and how they were used
- at the great cost of wearing them down (playback devices and medium)

So there are drawbacks on both sides.

you can get the emulator to look liek that old screen. for example many spectrum emulators (such as Klive or is it clive?) can make your monitor look like CRT TV. add the original screen to that and it is almost perfect. then you add a tape and load a tape manually at normal emulator speed. i mean who doens't want to wait 5 minutes to load a game?

if course you can also run it with "current graphics" mode and increase emulation speed to load the tape in few secs. or just use image file.while loads instantly.

Our first computer was a C64 and it is still working. From time to time we are playing the old games. My parents were clever in the 1990er, they bought extra parts of it in case something is getting crashed. And it is not stading in dust, it has a very nice place till the breaks.

(My brother was playing around with QuickBasic on it. I have some experience myself.)

Same thing with our two Pentiums. The last of them was shutting down in 2010 and was using MW 2000 every day. My father loved it. I had my own for a short time (2009-2010) and it worked well with MW XP. I could print, play and got internet... everything was working well till my mother crashed it.

Was glad to have it, because the new laptop had one bug after the other for 2 years and I shutted it down most of the time. Good for me that I can run it without any problems now.

The older the better.... it lasts longer.
I never buying new stuff and live happily ever after.

I have a Packard Bell with a 133Mhz Pentium, 8 MB RAM and a 7 GB HDD. It runs Windows 95 beautifully.

When I came home from college on fall break I noticed my family chucked the old Dell Windows 95 we've had since I was a little kid. So many memories - gone. The ability to play games like ZPC without hassle - gone. I currently operate a Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) laptop from about 2010 that is making it's way to the grave.
