1. Is it worth installing IE 7? it is for beginner user who somehow got used to IE. :wallbash: he has lack of RAM.

2. In microsoft outlook there is an option that enables you to request confirmation of email delivery as well as if email was read (for each individual email). Is there an option for that in Firebird as well? and where is it?

3. Which open source programme is good for changing a DVD video files into divX or similar? is it possible to substantially reduce the file in size and still keeping relativelly descent picture? like form 130 MB filesize to 3 or 4 MB.

I'd like to reply to 1.:

No, I'd not install the IE 7 if you're not behind an MS ISA-Server.

There are other very slim browsers like K-Meleon answering your RAM issue. The IE 7 as well as the Media Player 11 are quite pumped and will even use more RAM than the IE 6 and MP 10.

heh the smartripper page says :
Quote:
This software is no longer available, this page is stored for archival puposes only.

On 1st of January, 2006, a new copyright legislation came into force in Finland that made it illegal to distribute tools that allow circumvention of technical copy protections. The legislation was approved by Finnish parliament and was based on European Union Copyright Directive, a law that each EU member state has to implement to their national legislations.

As AfterDawn Ltd is a company located in Finland, we have to obey the new copyright legislation and therefor, the software you were searching for, is no longer available. For more details on options we tried to find, how the law changed our site and more, please read this article. [/b]
luckilly there are other links pointing to the software. but still this is a very stupid law... here i am with a DVD which is not copyrighted, cause movies are mine and i want to transfer it to other formates. yet this directive/law prevents me to do that efficiently.

that's i will try the smart ripper when i get home. i see they also provide some guides on how to do it.

as for IE 7 thanks. i had it in back of the head that smth was "wrong" with it but couldn't put my finger on it. Well we will get him more RAM soon and then things will work more or less normal again.

For question 1.
Firefox is a good browser but it uses tons of ram. So you could try opera which uses less but does not have as many addons and by the sounds of it you would not use many if any anyway.

it's not just abotu internet. other things are slowed down too. too many people was doing installs of too many things on that computer. anyway they will buy him another 512MB ram which should be more than enough for his needs.

anyone knows the answer to this? :

I have 768MB of RAM in this computer and 64MB of that is sued for onboard video but I still have quite alot as do many other who have 512mb plus. My second computer not on the net has 512MB 16MB shared for video so thast 496MB and even that has fire fox on it to open html pages that are sometimes inculded with rograms and there it runs great. Id say though the min for firefox would be 128MB in XP and 2000 and 96MB in ME and 98. I wont bother with 95 it's not that widew used and you would be better off with opera on an old 95 machine.
Trust me last year until about September I was using IE in the end it became the biggest peice of S**t Id ever used. Thats after I tried firefox. But before IE i'd used Netscape and thats no good to because not many people use it much because not all sites support it I think. But anyway basically Firefox and Opera are the best or I have heard before firefox it was called just Mozilla so if you have a web browser called that it should be good to.
