Well actually it should... but I don't think what Stroggy had in mind (at least that's not all).

There are laws - and in many countries they are very explicid. If porn is alowed only at certain hours of a day (usually from midnight on) the law should apply to the net aswell. There are also some things that would be wrong.
But most of all there should be a ban on different warez. I mean how can you log to a site and get the game that hasn't even appeared in the local store. That's piracy and is also perhibited by the law - but governments aren't doing enough about that...
I could go on and on...

Ah, once again Sebatianos understands the message I'm trying to convey.

of coarse there is a problem: you can't apply the laws of a country on an international service like the Internet.

That would also mean that abadonware would be also banned...Dont forget abadonware is still technically warez...

That's different topic Lizard, feel free to open it.

Seba,
then net would not be free, but under control, which I don't like, as we all would give up our freedom.

There are ways to filter contents of web browsing at home, and to log all internet activity.

This has to be done in family, but most parents failed as they have more important stuff then kids...

The main reason governments aren't doing a lot about it (or haven't been) is because it's amazingly hard to do so. They're starting to do more recently though, mainly about child pornography and illegal file sharing (music and films) - quite rightly since these are illegal activites, but regulating things like language, legal adult content, drugs references and violence is up to individual parents - in the same way that it's their responsibility to regulate what their child watches on TV and in the cinema. We shouldn't have to sacrifice the freedom of consenting adults to take responsibility for what they find on the internet in order to protect teenagers - we should help them to protect themselves.

The government has been doing efforts but yes very slowly due to like beef said, it takes time and effort, and plus it needs to be a worldwide effort, that's like one of the problems right now with spyware, sure there are laws in the states, but some other countries don't have those sorts of laws, and thus it gets hard to prosecute and such.
